By Business Wire News

PrismTech™, a global leader in software platforms for distributed systems, today announced that it has joined the Future Airborne Capability Environment (FACE™) Consortium, a consortium of The Open Group taking a leadership role in developing open standards for avionics systems of the future.

The FACE Consortium was formed in 2010 as a government and industry partnership to define an open avionics environment for all military airborne platform types. Its FACE Technical Standard is the open avionics standard for making military computing operations more robust, interoperable, portable and secure. The standard enables developers to create and deploy a wide catalog of applications for use across the entire spectrum of military aviation systems through a common operating environment. The latest edition of the standard further promotes application interoperability and portability with enhanced requirements for exchanging data among FACE components and emphasis on defining common language requirements for the standard.

The FACE Technical Standard names the Object Management Group’s (OMG) Data Distribution Service for Real-Time Systems (DDS) open standard as a key component to enable messaging for the Transport Services Segment. DDS technology embodies many of the goals of the FACE Technical Standard, including standardized components and well defined interfaces to allow portability of applications.

PrismTech has a strong heritage of providing standards based, open architecture defense and aerospace solutions. PrismTech’s Vortex™ OpenSplice™ is the leading implementation (commercial and open source) of the DDS standard and is being used in numerous mission-critical defense and aerospace applications, ranging from radar processors to next-generation network-centric systems.

PrismTech plans to provide a FACE 2.1 Transport Services Segment (TSS) reference implementation for its DDS-based Vortex product family in the summer of 2016. The implementation will provide both C++ and Java TSS Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) to enable portable components to share and exchange data using Vortex’s proven and interoperable DDS products. The PrismTech reference implementation will provide a mapping-layer between the standardized FACE Transport Services API and the standard OMG-DDS API and will be developed as an open-source project.

“We have a rich history developing data distribution solutions for the military and aerospace industry,” said Steve Jennis, SVP Corporate Development, PrismTech. “We’re looking forward to continuing to drive innovation in this sector. Through this consortium, we’ll work closely with other aviation leaders on standardization, interoperability, and portability of infrastructure and software within avionics systems.”

“One of the goals of the FACE approach is software interoperability of portable applications and components. We’re very pleased that PrismTech has joined The Open Group FACE Consortium to participate and bring their expertise to support achieving the goals of our initiative,” said Steve Nunn, President & CEO, The Open Group.
