WASHINGTON

The American Cleaning Institute® (ACI) honored this year’s recipient of The Clean and Healthy Families & Communities Award at the National Extension Association of Family & Consumer Sciences (NEAFCS) Annual Session. The award, established by ACI, recognizes NEAFCS members for innovative educational programs and outreach efforts that help families and individuals understand the link between clean homes and good health. The programs must utilize ACI’s educational materials and demonstrate innovative outreach efforts that impact the local community while raising awareness of safe and effective uses of cleaning products in the home or community.

This year’s recipient, Lisa Treiber, Extension Educator with Michigan State University Extension, was honored for her work promoting laundry safety through her “Children are Curious – Prevent Accidental Poisonings” program. For the last two years, Treiber has displayed her educational materials during the Midland County, Michigan Community Baby Shower. The shower is held annually for low income parents and caregivers at a local community center. Over the past two years, Treiber has presented her program to 150 people including 100 mothers and primary caregivers, educating them on the importance of proper use and storage of liquid laundry packets as well as the potential harm that can result from accidental exposure to these products.

“I am honored to be the recipient of the Clean and Healthy Families & Communities Award,” said Treiber. “I became interested in promoting this topic after meeting Nancy Bock of ACI at the NEAFCS Conferences in 2013 and seeing her demonstrate support for this important topic. It is very rewarding to be able to provide safety tips to new moms and help keep children safe from preventable accidents.”

For her efforts, Treiber was presented with a $500 scholarship to attend the NEAFCS Annual Session where she was honored by Nancy Bock in front of an audience of Family and Consumer Science Professionals. Her program will be featured on the ACI website and in the upcoming issue of Cleaning Matters®, ACI’s bimonthly newsletter that reaches more than 7,000 educators and members of the press.
