Technavio Announces Top Three Emerging Trends Impacting the Global Microwave Packaging Market Through 2020

June 7, 2016 | By Business Wire News

LONDON

Technavio’s latest report on the global microwave packaging marketprovides an analysis on the most important trends expected to impact the market outlook from 2016-2020. Technavio defines an emerging trend as a factor that has the potential to significantly impact the market and contribute to its growth or decline.

Sharan Raj, a lead analyst from Technavio, specializing in research on packaging sector, says, “The market for microwave packaging is expected to grow at a rapid rate during the forecast period owing to the economic development and growing urbanization in APAC. As a result, there will be a growing demand for convenient packaging like zippers, cans, peel-off lids, spouts, and cartons.”

The top three emerging trends driving the global microwave packaging market according to Technavio transportation and logistics research analysts are:

  • Demand for small-sized packs
  • Increased adoption of pouch packaging
  • Advances in high-barrier flexible packaging material

Demand for small-sized packs

Growing number of single-person households has led to increased demand for food products in small-sized packs. This has compelled packaging companies to expand their product and material offerings to meet customer requirements. Small-sized packs use less shelf space, which allows merchants to stack more products and thereby increase shelf presence. It also provides an option of brand switching. The use of small-sized packs is a market strategy that entices consumers to try new products.

Since each retail chain approaches packaging differently, food manufacturers are under pressure to change their packaging lines to meet the specific needs of the customer. Several merchants want packaging that uses less shelf space, so that more items can be stacked, and attractive packaging, thereby increasing shelf presence. To address these issues, packaging vendors have come up with multipack and variety pack solutions. “Retailers prefer multipacks and variety packs to entice consumers to try new products or new varieties of a brand in small quantities,” says Sharan.

Increased adoption of pouch packaging

Pouch packaging is gaining traction in the microwavable packaging market primarily in the US and APAC. Pouches are made of multi-level laminates that maintain the sterile packaging of different foods and beverages. Similar to the packaging for juices, milk, and ready-to-eat food products, they are provided without any caps or closures.

Pouch packaging maintains safety and product freshness, and is convenient to use due to its compact and lightweight nature. Many frozen and fresh food packaging companies have started the use of retort pouch packaging as it provides scope for the creation of new designs and sizes. It can also be customized based on the demand from consumer goods manufacturers. Sustainable stand-up pouches are eco-friendly as they are non-toxic and biodegradable. These pouches protect the quality and essence of the product inside. Many companies in the fresh food industry prefer the use of these products as compared to the conventional packaging methods.

Advances in high-barrier flexible packaging material

Increased use and advances in high-barrier flexible packaging products is fueling the growth of the market. High-barrier flexible material contains resins that protect the products from being exposed to moisture and oxygen. This helps in providing long shelf life to food products. Packaging made from these materials has higher performance than other packaging products, as specialized coatings and laminated structures along with resins that are used to develop this form of packaging. Some high-barrier plastics used in the development of pouches include biaxially oriented polyethylene terephthalate (BOPET) and ethylene vinyl alcohol (EVOH).
