Statement by Honda Canada Regarding Safety Recall of Certain Takata PSDI-5 Driver Front Airbag Inflators

February 4, 2016 | By Business Wire News

MARKHAM, Ontario

Based on a recent Defect Information Report issued by the airbag inflator supplier, Takata, to the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, Honda will conduct a safety recall of approximately 2.5M Honda and Acura automobiles in North America, including approximately 266,000 vehicles in Canada. The non-desiccated PSDI-5 Takata driver front airbag inflators will be replaced, free of charge. Honda has not received any reports of Takata PSDI-5 inflator ruptures in Honda or Acura vehicles worldwide.

Honda plans to replace all of these recalled inflators with new parts from an alternative supplier. However, due to the large volume of new inflators needed to complete this recall, the necessary replacement parts are not expected to be available until fall 2016. Honda Canada intends to mail initial recall notices to owners of affected vehicles, according to the most current address information we have available. This mailing of initial recall notices is expected to be completed by March, 2016. Once replacement parts become available, Honda will provide a subsequent notification to owners which will include instructions to pursue repair at their local authorized dealer. The second round of notifications will begin with older model year vehicles and will expand accordingly as more replacement parts become available.

The most-updated available consumer information about this action can be obtained at www.honda.ca/recalls and www.acura.ca/recalls or by calling (877) 445-7754 for Honda owners and (877) 445-9844 for Acura owners. At this time, only a preliminary listing of the potential vehicle identification numbers (VIN) to be included in this recall is available. We anticipate that owners of the affected models will be able to confirm their vehicles’ recall status on these sites beginning on February 15, 2016.

With this new market action, a total of approximately 970,000 Honda and Acura vehicles in Canada, have been or are now subject to replacement of a Takata driver and/or passenger front airbag inflator. To date, Honda Canada has not identified any abnormal airbag deployments in Canada involving the identified issues these recalls are intended to address.
