Ryder Maintenance Experts Named Among Top 10 Overall Winners at 11th Annual TMCSuperTech Competition

Ryder System, Inc. (NYSE: R), a leader in commercial fleet management,dedicated transportation, and supply chain solutions, today announced that three of its technicians were named among TMCSuperTech’s Top 10 Overall Winners: Matt Weiman (fifth place), Christopher Barnett (ninth place), and Ken Bilyea (tenth place). The annual National Technician Skills Competition, held by the American Trucking Associations’ Technology & Maintenance Council (TMC), gathers contestants from all segments of the trucking industry, many of whom are state, regional, or corporate champions, and is designed to measure thorough knowledge of medium- and heavy-duty commercial vehicles.

TMCSuperTech consists of a series of tabletop and test-based challenges that determine who moves on to the final Hands-On Skills Challenge. Representing Team Ryder this year were experts identified through Ryder’s internal Top Technician (Top Tech) Competition, including Ryder’s eight 2015 Top Tech finalists, Ryder’s 2014 Top Tech winner, and other past years’ Top Tech winners. Ryder selects its team from among its technician population of more than 5,000 U.S. and Canadian-based service technicians. The Top Tech Competition consists of three qualifying rounds of challenging written and hands-on tests that lead up to the final competition consisting of 10 rigorous hands-on skills tests. The finalists walk away with cash prizes, and the Ryder “Top Technician” wins a brand new car.

In addition to earning three spots among the Top 10 Overall Winners at SuperTech, Ryder’s technicians were recognized for their exceptional performance at the station challenges. The following techs came in first place at the following stations:

  • Christopher Barnett– RP Manual: This challenge consisted of answering written questions based on sections of TMC’s Recommended Practices Manual and stating which recommended practice provided the technician with the answer.
  • Christopher Barnett– Precision Measuring: This station asked contestants to accurately measure various components and document the dimensions. There were exercises on reading micrometers, calculating clearances, and working with torque wrenches and proper torque values.
  • Kenneth BilyeaEngine Hardware: Contestants were tested on their knowledge of engine and engine-related concerns, which required them to troubleshoot, service and repair engine induction, accessory, fuel, and exhaust systems under load and/or unloaded conditions.
  • Derick Hebert – CNG Safety:This station featured a written test to assess technicians’ knowledge of compressed natural gas (CNG) repair and maintenance practices.
  • Darek Mowinski – Engine Electronics: Participants were asked to demonstrate the ability to interpret an Engine Electrical code and follow correct diagnostic procedures.
  • Stephen Radford– Service Information: Contestants were prompted to retrieve service information from current accepted industry sources. They were tested on their ability to use on-line repair information to diagnose and fix maintenance problems they are likely to encounter in their jobs.

The goal of TMC is to improve transport equipment, its maintenance and maintenance management. The Council develops Recommended Engineering and Maintenance Practices that are voluntarily adopted by fleets, OEMs and components suppliers.
