Research and Markets (http://www.researchandmarkets.com/research/ldmwbw/pipe_profile_and) has announced the addition of the “Pipe, Profile & Tubing Extrusion in North America” report to their offering.

Pipe is formed when plastics is extruded through a round shaping die, cooled in a water bath, and either cut and coiled. The most commonly used pipe materials are PVC and high-density polyethylene.

Rigid PVC pipe is commonly used in building and construction for drain, waste and vent applications, and is processed on specialty twin-screw extruders; HDPE pipe is used for a wide range of industrial, electrical and drainage applications. Flexible pipe is often considered tubing. Tubing can be used in industrial (hoses), food (straws), medical (catheters) and a variety of other applications.

The profile extrusion process also can be used for items including drinking straws and medical tubing, and are manufactured the same as a regular extrusion process up until the die. Placing a pin or mandrel inside the die extrudes hollow sections and in most cases positive pressure is applied to the internal cavities through the pin.

Plastic resin, usually in powder or granule form, is fed from a hopper onto the screw. It is then conveyed along the barrel, where it is heated by conduction from the barrel heaters and shear due to its movement across the screw flights. The depth of the screw flights channel is reduced along the length of the screw in order to compact the material.

U.S. demand for extruded plastics is expected to grow by about 3 percent in 2014, with PVC remaining the largest segment.
