EVANSTON, Ill.

Manufacturers’ News, Inc.– Industrial employment increased at a much slower pace in North Dakota over the past year, reports the 2016 North Dakota Manufacturers Register®, an industrial database and directory published by Manufacturers’ News, Inc. (MNI) Evanston, IL. According to data collected by MNI, industrial jobs in North Dakota inched up about 1%, adding 429 net jobs from June 2014 to June 2015, far less than in previous years.

Industrial employment soared 31% in North Dakota between 2010 and 2014, according to MNI data, due mostly to the state’s oil boom. The state is currently home to 1,204 manufacturers employing 47,159 workers.

“North Dakota’s industrial base grew exponentially as the oil boom took hold, but growth is sputtering with the fall in oil prices,” says Tom Dubin, President of the Evanston, IL-based publishing company, which has been surveying industry since 1912. “However, the state’s abundance of natural resources goes beyond oil, with a stronghold in food processing and agribusiness, and its low taxes are a draw for many enterprises.”

MNI reports employment in North Dakota’s oil/gas extraction sector stalled over the past year, adding no new net jobs after skyrocketing 250% between 2010 and 2014. The industry now ranks second in the state for number of jobs, employing 9,030.

North Dakota’s top sector by employment, industrial machinery, added jobs over the survey period, up 8% in the past year to its current level of 9,490 jobs. Third-ranked food products accounts for 5,351 jobs, virtually unchanged over the year.

According to MNI’s city data, manufacturing employment in Fargo was unchanged over the year. Growth also stalled in second-ranked Williston after growing threefold over the previous four years.
