STATE COLLEGE, Pa.

Teledyne Paradise Datacom, a business unit of Teledyne Microwave Solutions,is focusing attention on its new outdoor SSPA system, Outdoor PowerMAX™, at CommunicAsia 2015 this week. With no need to construct a shelter and no single point of failure, Outdoor PowerMAX™ dramatically cuts costs and offers a unique value proposition to video broadcasters and gateway earth station operators. Customers can learn more about Outdoor PowerMAX at CommunicAsia by visiting Teledyne Paradise Datacom staff at Booth 1Q2-08.

A modular N+1 soft-fail, phase-combined system, Outdoor PowerMAX is typically used as a “self-redundant” system and can be sized so that even with the loss of an RF module, the system automatically adjusts to maintain constant output power without the need for mechanical switching. Another unique Outdoor PowerMAX feature is “true RMS” output power measurement, which reports the true RMS output power independent of the number of carriers and modulation schemes.

A new high power SSPA system based on the company’s existing indoor PowerMAX™, the outdoor version delivers similar features but with the additional cost-savings and deployment simplicity of an outdoor HPA (high power amplifier). Like the indoor version, Outdoor PowerMAX delivers complete parallel redundancy down to the embedded control level, thus allowing continuous remote communications with the system even in the event of the loss of an entire amplifier.

Equipped with a powerful M&C system, customers can operate the system either locally or remotely and as a ‘single’ chassis or a multi-module array. Unlike a typical ‘rack’ system, the Outdoor PowerMAX modules are contained in an integrated frame designed to make removal and replacement of a module quick and easy.

Some of the key benefits for video broadcasters are:

  • No CapEX outlays for construction of shelters
  • Lower MTBF (mean time before failure)
  • Can be installed at the antenna – perfect for high-power applications where IFL insertion loss is an issue
  • No single point of failure, and soft-fail redundant
  • Only 12.5% of total system power is reserved for back-up

“Outdoor PowerMAX™ is ideally suited for video broadcasters and gateway earth stations considering TWTA replacement projects and new construction,” said Tony Radford, Vice President of Sales for Paradise.

PowerMAX has a modular architecture, so customers need not fully populate the system at purchase. This minimizes the initial CapEX while providing an easy upgrade path. The system is available in many configurations and can generate up to 10 kW in C band and X band, and up to 5.7 kW in Ku band.
