LOS ANGELES

Morisawa Inc., a leading Japanese font developer, announced today that a selection of fonts from the company and subsidiary TypeBank Co., Ltd. can now be found in Typekit on Adobe Creative Cloud. With immediate effect, the 20 fonts, including Morisawa’s popular Ryumin, are now available in the Typekit service, making it possible for Creative Cloud users to access these Japanese fonts at no additional fee for all their creative projects, including print and Web. The announcement was made in Los Angeles at Adobe MAX, the world’s leading creativity conference.

“Over the nine decades since our predecessors invented the first Japanese language phototypesetting machine in 1924, Morisawa has committed itself to the creation and distribution of Japanese language type,” said Akihiko Morisawa, President and CEO, Morisawa Inc. “To date, Morisawa has only offered its products and services in the Japanese market. However, over the years we have continued to receive a growing number of requests from foreign companies interested in using our Japanese fonts. I am keenly aware that many companies active in the global market desire to display the Japanese language as beautifully as possible in a variety of formats – in print, on manufactured goods and Web sites, and in mobile applications. At the same time, we recognize that the work environment for creatives now extends beyond the PC to include mobile devices.

“We first joined hands with Adobe in 1987 to promote Japanese language desktop publishing. We believe that this new collaboration with Adobe is the most effective and efficient way to address emerging needs and changing work environments,” said Mr. Morisawa. “Today’s announcement is also the first milestone in the expansion of our business into the global marketplace. I am excited by the prospects of this collaboration, which will make it possible for creators around the world to use our fonts – long the choice of Japanese creative professionals – via Typekit on the Adobe Creative Cloud, the world’s most trusted design platform.”

“Since 1987, Adobe and Morisawa have worked together to bring the subtlety and beauty of Japanese character systems into the digital age,” said Shantanu Narayen, Adobe president and chief executive officer. “Our expanded partnership through Adobe Typekit, part of Creative Cloud, is bringing Morisawa’s industry-defining Japanese type designs to millions of creatives worldwide.”
