Mitsubishi Electric’s new architecture, FLEXConnect®, integrates Movimento OTA to accelerate the delivery of infotainment services. It is part of the company’s ongoing work with automakers to integrate advanced technologies into cars. Car owners can now look forward to a personalized entertainment system with continuous updates without visiting the dealer. The combined technologies break new ground in securely delivering software from the cloud to the car, paving the way for real-time delivery of new applications and services to vehicles.

“The ability to update vehicle software is critically important to OEMs given the exponential growth of software in the car,” said Doug Ray, director of Sales, Quality and Engineering, Audio, Video & Communications, Mitsubishi Electric. “By incorporating Movimento OTA technology into FLEXConnect®, our customers will be able to shorten software deployment times, roll out new features, and instantly issue security patches throughout the vehicle, not just in the infotainment system.”

The Movimento OTA platform leverages proven reflash technology used by global OEMs and tier one suppliers to update vehicle software. It includes back-end infrastructure to securely manage all in-vehicle software and an in-vehicle client for collecting diagnostic data, as well as technology to thwart intrusion attempts.

The software-defined car is a growing phenomenon that is experiencing increased spending among automakers. Under this collaboration, Mitsubishi Electric and Movimento will help automakers optimize technology investments by designing and engineering infotainment systems that can keep crucial software-dependent systems up to date, virtually eliminating software recalls and associated warranty costs. According to the analyst firm IHS, remote OTA upgrades will save automakers $35 billion by 2022.

“Movimento is pleased to be working with Mitsubishi Electric,” said Movimento CEO Ben Hoffman. “The company’s focus on infotainment and ADAS means its architecture is a natural fit for the robustness and security that the Movimento OTA platform provides.”

While Mitsubishi Electric and Movimento have collaborated previously, today’s announcement marks an important milestone in building infotainment solutions from the ground up with OTA capabilities.

“Mitsubishi Electric recognizes the tremendous benefit of having an OTA solution integrated into the infotainment system from the very beginning,” Ray explained. “It allows us to shorten the time to production and lets automakers take advantage of OTA throughout the entire vehicle lifecycle, saving costs and increasing customer satisfaction.”

Adds Hoffman: “We’re pleased to join Mitsubishi Electric in creating a platform that supports automakers from cradle to grave and we believe that remote software management will ultimately open up new business models and opportunities for the entire industry.”
