Eight Newly Elected Directors Join the Arizona Technology Council’s Esteemed Board

PHOENIX

The Arizona Technology Council today announced the election of eight new members serving three year terms to its board of directors in a unanimous vote at its October 15 meeting. The Council’s current board of directors includes 36 members, five of which are officers.

Zylstra, president and CEO of the Arizona Technology Council. “The vast range of experience and expertise they bring to the Council will prove invaluable to our membership as we advance our agenda designed to make a positive and lasting impact on the technology industry.”

Through their broad range of experience in business, entrepreneurship, and technology, the Council’s executive officers and board of directors serve in an advisory and fiduciary role. All Council members, as well as the technology ecosystem of Arizona at large, benefit from the board’s hard-won insight and strategic vision.

The newly elected directors are:

• Colonel Dennis Beal, USMC (Ret.), associate vice president, Business Development, University of Arizona Office of Research & Discovery: Colonel Beal retired from active duty in 2004, after 26 years as a Marine officer, including 14 years of experience as an acquisition/procurement officer and program manager of six top-level strategic business organizations that cover the expanse of engineering, technology development and conceptual design of products and systems. He previously served as the Executive Director, Strategic Commercial Alliances/Programs for the Texas A&M University System, providing program management and outreach services to over 400 commercial and business partners. In 2012, he established an expansive team to pursue the University’s 10 year ($2.2 billion per year) contract with Sandia National Labs. Colonel Beal also previously served in senior director positions for both Ericsson and Northrup Grumman.
• Steve Chang, MD, neurosurgeon, Barrow Neurological Institute: After graduating with honors and distinction from Duke University, Dr. Chang went on to earn his MD at the University of North Carolina. He completed his residency and multiple fellowships at the prestigious Barrow Neurological Institute, where he currently both instructs and mentors neurosurgery residents and treats patients with spinal disorders and brain tumors. His numerous honors and awards include a 2001 Merit Grant for Continued Medical Education from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, National Institutes of Health Research Scholars Program.

• Kate Maynard, vice president, Alliance Bank of Arizona: A 12 year veteran of the Alliance Bank of Arizona, Maynard currently leads the treasury management sales team. During her tenure, she has developed several banking programs for the non-profit and political sectors, and has placed special emphasis on supporting philanthropic campaigns such as Silent Witness, Friends of Public Radio Arizona’s Spot 127 program, and Local First Arizona’s Devoured Food and Wine Festival. Heavily engaged in her own personal community giving, Maynard is the incoming vice-chair of Ryan House and serves on several boards and committees for charitable organizations.
• Timothy McDaniel, Ph.D., sr. vice president of Emerging Opportunities, TGen: With extensive experience in genomics, cancer biology, infection disease, bioinformatics, technology development, and clinical development, McDaniel works to commercialize TGen’s technology via business development and external partnerships. Dr. McDaniel came to TGen from PMed Management, LLC, where he served as executive vice president and general manager of Ashion Analytics. Prior to that, he worked at Illumina Inc., where he served in a variety of roles in R&D, product development, and clinical laboratory development. In these roles, he helped grow the company from a privately held startup with no products to a $20 billion leader in genomics technology.
• Laura J. McGill, Engineering vice president of Raytheon Missile Systems: A principal engineering fellow, McGill was formerly RMS Engineering deputy after serving as deputy director for Advanced Medium Range Air-to-Air Missiles and Special Programs. McGill previously served as chief engineer for the Air Warfare Systems product line, a $2 billion portfolio that includes such programs as air-to-air missiles, precision strike air-to-ground missiles, and Tomahawk cruise missiles. McGill began her career as a test integration engineer at General Dynamics. She earned a bachelor’s degree in aeronautical and astronautical engineering from the University of Washington and a master’s degree in aerospace systems through a General Dynamics engineering development program.
• Jerry Proctor, SES-COL, U.S. Army (Ret.), JVP Strategic Consulting, LLC: Proctor recently retired from the U.S. Army with 40 years of military and civilian senior executive service. His broad and diverse experience spans leadership positions from platoon leader to Brigade level to Deputy Commanding General. Proctor’s professional experience and expertise ranges from Military Intelligence, Aviation and Special Operations to leadership and management at the two star level. He has also been deeply involved with technology promotion and development, plus STEM promotion across Arizona, for well over a decade. Prior to his retirement, Proctor served as Deputy to the Commanding General, U.S. Army Intelligence Center at Ft. Huachuca, the busiest manned and unmanned aviation operation in the world.
• Melissa Ray, vice president, Administration, Advanced Individual Medicine: Ray is an operations executive with 15 years of experience driving process and performance improvements across a variety of industries, including healthcare, biotechnology and manufacturing for medical devices. In addition, she brings a strong background in and focus on customer satisfaction, quality assurance, and infrastructure building. While at Motorola Life Sciences, she was a founding member of the team that developed one of the world’s first DNA Microarrays. For the last eight years she served as the director of Project Management at TGen. Ray graduated from ASU with a bachelor’s degree in Bioengineering with a combined emphasis in Molecular & Cellular and Biochemistry. She then pursued a graduate certificate in Project Management and an MBA from Keller Graduate School of Management.
• Leland Snook, director, Rates and Rate Strategy, Arizona Public Service (APS): In his over 28 years’ experience in the electrical utility business that included a 22 year career with Tucson Electric Power Company, Snook has served in a variety of leadership and professional roles. His areas of expertise include development and analysis of electric utility revenue requirements, modeling of cost service, rate schedule design, embedded and marginal cost analysis and formulation of utility service policies. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering from Texas Tech University and is a registered electrical engineer in the state of Arizona.

In addition to the new additions to the board, the following directors were elected to serve a second three- year term: Michael Guggemos, Insight; Michael Hawksworth, MSS Technologies; Chris Johnson, Lane Terralever; Clark Peterson, Vonage Business Solutions Group; Tony Portela, onTop Technology Corp.; David Tuhy, Intel; Jeff Unruh, Alerion Capitol Group; Sangy Vatsa, American Express.
