DSNY, ERI, and Veolia to Host Manhattan SAFE Disposal Event This Sunday at Columbia University

NEW YORK

Electronic Recyclers International (ERI), the nation’s leading recycler of electronics, Veolia Environmental Services and the New York City Department of Sanitation (DSNY) will host a NYC SAFE Disposal Event in Manhattan this weekend.

The Sunday, June 26^th event, will take place at Columbia University/Teachers College on 120th St. between Broadway and Amsterdam Ave. Cars can approach from Seminary Drive down Amsterdam Avenue. A walk-in area will also be available for residents taking public transportation. Events are held, rain or shine, from 10 am to 4 pm.

The SAFE Disposal events help NYC residents dispose of harmful household products safely and responsibly. DSNY, ERI, and Veolia host SAFE (Solvents, Automotive, Flammables and Electronics) Disposal Events ten times each year, in every borough of New York City.

Only NYC residential waste is accepted at SAFE Disposal Events, and no commercial vehicles are allowed. Residents must provide proof of NYC residency, such as a NYS driver’s license or utility bill.

“Our SAFE Disposal Events give New Yorkers an opportunity to get potentially harmful household materials out of their homes and we help keep these items out of landfills,” said Sanitation Commissioner Kathryn Garcia. “The events are quick and convenient, and as you can see by the extraordinary turn out for our recent events, including a recent event in Queens, which was the largest event of its kind in New York City history, they are very popular as well.”

Garcia added that after this weekend’s event in Manhattan, another round of events will begin starting in August.

As part of the SAFE events, ERI manages the collection, handling, and reuse or recycling of electronic waste. ERI responsibly recycles all of the e-waste collected at these events, guaranteeing data security and privacy destruction. Veolia collects, handles, and recycles or disposes of household hazardous waste; and DSNY’s Environmental Police Unit takes control of the pharmaceuticals.

ERI has a long-term contract with the City of New York, with the cost of services covered by electronics manufacturers under the NYS Electronic Equipment Recycling and Reuse Act.
