Fred Shillington, a long-term employee of Canadian Bearings Ltd., Mississauga, Ont., and former manager of the company’s Atlantic Region in Saint John, N.B., recently attended a retirement dinner hosted by CB and attended by more than 100 luminaries from the bearing and power transmission industry.

Shillington went into semi-retirement a year ago, promising CB founder Farrokh Kahlili that he’d only work on “rainy days.” The past year’s generally foul weather didn’t work to his advantage, and as he said at the dinner, he hadn’t realized that his boss of many years had power over the weather.

The evening event, held July 21, 2004, at the Mississauga Convention Centre, included speeches from both CB colleagues and vendors. Among the gifts he received to send him officially off on his retirement was a Canadian flag and a Raymond Weil watch, with which he was thrilled. “It’s spectacular,” he said, as he thanked all those who had supported him over the years.
