Cable-maker Elocab designs and builds each cable according to its real-life application. The company has designed more than 10,000 different types of cables for various applications, including welding/paint spray robots and surveillance cameras in sewer systems or nuclear power stations. Sensitive data acquired by sensors or miniature digital cameras has to be transmitted uncorrupted to the central processor via cables, which are often subject to harsh conditions such as heat or cold, heavy EMI attacks, extreme exposure to chemicals or radiation, or constant flexing. Failure of these cables can bring down the system. In building the cables, the company’s engineers have access to a wide array of options, ranging from different conductor materials and cable designs to internal fillers, shielding and jacketing materials. Cable diameter is claimed to be 30% to 40% smaller than off-the-shelf products, while life span generally is longer.
