Westinghouse Springfields has been recognized with the President’s Award for its outstanding approach to occupational safety and health by the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA).
Success in the RoSPA Occupational Health and Safety Awards in the last 14 consecutive years, in which Springfields has gained a Gold Award each year, has resulted in the nuclear fuel manufacturing site receiving a prestigious President’s Award in this year’s awards – the second time the site has received such an award.
Dating back 59 years, the RoSPA Awards program is the largest and longest-running of its kind in the U.K. It recognizes commitment to accident and ill-health prevention and is open to businesses and organizations of all types and sizes from across the U.K. and other countries. The program not only looks at accident records, but also entrants’ overarching health and safety management systems, including practices such as leadership and workforce involvement.
“The RoSPA Awards encourage improvement in occupational health and safety management,” said David Rawlins, RoSPA’s awards manager. “Organizations that gain recognition for their health and safety management systems, such as Westinghouse Springfields, contribute to raising standards overall, and we congratulate them.”
Mick Gornall, Westinghouse Springfields managing director, said, “The award continues Springfields’ proud history in the RoSPA Awards. It is the 15th year in succession that our occupational health and safety management systems and culture have been recognized at the highest level. The award not only acknowledges all the hard work of our employees, but also recognizes our excellent approach and extremely high level of performance in terms of health and safety, whilst reflecting the importance Westinghouse places on safety throughout the company worldwide.”
The majority of awards that RoSPA presents are non-competitive, marking achievement at merit, bronze, silver and gold levels. Organizations maintaining high standards can win gold medals, president’s awards and orders of distinction.
Competitive awards, presented in more than 20 sectors, also recognize excellence in specialist areas such as the management of occupational road risk.
The President’s Award will be presented in a ceremony at the Hilton Birmingham Metropole Hotel, at the National Exhibition Centre, on Tuesday, July 14, 2015.
