Westinghouse Engineers Honored as ANS Fellows

Two Westinghouse Electric Company employees were honored as Fellows by the American Nuclear Society (ANS).

Dr. Fausto Franceschini, Westinghouse Global Technology Development fellow engineer, is being honored for his technical leadership in the nuclear industry, including developing and validating nuclear methodologies for reactor analysis and landmark applications of advanced simulation technology to support the company’s AP1000® reactor program.

Franceschini provides technical leadership of the company’s advanced reactor program and is a key contributor to developing and applying advanced simulation capabilities, including for the Consortium for Advanced Simulation of Light Water Reactors. His career highlights include developing advanced fuel and core design, advanced fuel cycles, and radiation and detection modeling techniques. He has authored over 70 papers on related topics, held leadership positions in the ANS Reactor Physics Division, is a sought expert by the International Atomic Energy Agency, and has received several awards and recognitions including two George Westinghouse Signature Awards – the highest level company award.

Dr. Martin Plys, vice president of Waste Technology and Post-Fukushima Services at Westinghouse Fauske & Associates LLC, was honored for his work in creating and managing models for the MAAP suite of computer codes for severe nuclear reactor accidents, notably completion of MAAP4, which is used for evaluating individual plants, and for contributions to key nuclear facility cleanup projects in the U.S. Department of Energy complex and at Sellafield in the U.K.

Plys leads the technical aspects of new initiatives in waste management and storage in the U.K, in recovery efforts in fuel removal from the damaged reactors in Japan, and in risk assessment for waste reprocessing at sites in Japan and U.K. His career has included technology development, consulting and business development in waste management, accident crisis response and risk assessment, including model development. He has authored more than 30 papers on related topics.
