VSP Optics Group Deploys Integrated Daifuku/Wynright Material Handling System in New Optical Manufacturing Laboratory for Faster Product Delivery

October 14, 2015 | By Business Wire News

ELK GROVE VILLAGE, Ill.

Wynright Corporation, a wholly owned subsidiary of Daifuku North America Holding Company and a leading U.S.-based provider of intelligent material handling systems, announced today that VSP® Optics Group, a division of VSP Global®, the nation’s largest healthcare organization by membership, selected an automated material handling solution developed by Daifuku/Wynright for its state-of-the art optical lens manufacturing laboratory. This initiative was driven by VSP’s commitment to elevating speed and service levels for its 72-million members nationwide.

Responding to the unique challenge, Wynright offered a materials handling solution to address the traditionally manual approach of processing eyewear and lenses. Integrated into the solution were a number of Wynright manufactured or developed products, which included an AS/RS from Daifuku Japan, Wynsoft™ warehouse execution systems, Automotion® Conveyor equipment, Wynright robotics and a mezzanine from the award winning Structural Solutions team.

The system is deployed at the eye care leader’s newly opened optical lens manufacturing laboratory in Folsom, Calif., the largest of its kind in the country, where more than nearly 500 employees produce up to 4,600 pairs of customized, prescription eyeglasses a day.

“The new automated buffer system pairs up frames and lenses, eliminating the need in some cases to wait for the doctor to physically mail in the frames to the lab before we can start processing the lenses,” said Joe Maris, Senior Vice President of Laboratory Operations for VSP Optics Group. “Now we have actionable data from the doctor’s electronic orders, which enables us to match the frames with data and cut potentially a day or two off production time. The team at the lab really challenged each other to innovate and look at technology outside of our industry that would make a difference for our customers.”

“The initiative with VSP illustrates the powerful integration capabilities of Wynright and Daifuku North America since our 2013 acquisition,” said Kevin Ambrose, President and CEO of Wynright. “We are at the forefront of material handling technologies and ingenuity, and are dedicated to helping global leaders like VSP reduce manual processes, cut order delivery times and improve overall customer experiences – regardless of the material type or vertical market.”
