Manufacturers’ News, Inc./– Tennessee manufacturing employment climbed for a fourth straight year, but at a slower rate than in previous years, reports the 2016 Tennessee Manufacturers Register®, an industrial database and directory published by Manufacturers’ News, Inc. (MNI) Evanston, IL. According to MNI’s database of manufacturers, Tennessee gained 1,994 industrial jobs from September 2014 to September 2015, or a half percent.
Tennessee is now home to 6,828 manufacturers employing 386,185 workers. MNI reports the state has so far added 12,637 industrial jobs or 3.4% since September 2011.
“Tennessee’s competitive labor costs, solid infrastructure and favorable business environment continue to draw manufacturers to the state, with the transportation equipment industry posting double-digit employment increases over the past several years,” says Tom Dubin, President of the Evanston, IL-based publishing company, which has been surveying industry since 1912. “However, like many states, a shortage of skilled workers and a stronger dollar is putting a dent in growth.”
MNI reports gains were led by the transportation equipment industry, which increased 5.4% over the year and has climbed steadily over the past several years, adding 11,754 jobs or 30% since September 2009. Transportation equipment ranks as the state’s largest sector by number of jobs, employing 51,001.
Other Tennessee industries adding jobs over the year included electronics, up 2.3%; rubber/plastics, up 2.2%; lumber/wood, up 1.2%; and furniture/fixtures, up 1.1%.
Tennessee industries that lost jobs over the year included printing/publishing, down 4.7%; textiles/apparel, down 4%; primary metals, down 2.4%; and food products, down 1.5%.
Manufacturing jobs in Memphis declined 1.8% over the year, and fell 1% in Nashville, but rose 2.3% in Knoxville, reports MNI.
