Growth of electromagnetic spectrum for telemetering

Aeronautical telemetry (ATM) spectrum is essential for aeronautical vehicle flight testing for both commercial and military applications. It transmits real-time data during these flight tests. However, the current allotment of spectrum for flight testing and ATM is insufficient due to the exponential growth of required measure and data rates. In addition, the existing telemetric bands have been reduced internationally, as they are being violated by commercial network providers and unlicensed wireless devices.

To combat the aforementioned issues, the World Radiocommunication Conference (WRC 2007) decided to secure additional radio spectrum resources for aeronautical telemetry. It allocated frequency bands that range from 4,400 to 6,700 MHz for aeronautical mobile telemetry (AMT) and aeronautical mobile service (AMS). The new WRC-bands will allow the inference of wide band telemetry links into flight test missions. It allocated APAC with a usable bandwidth of up to 59 Megahertz.

Trend toward remote radio telemetry

The increase in system complexity, technological advancements, rise in asymmetric warfare, and demand for efficient and low-cost telemetric systems have led to the development of remote radio telemetry. Its primary function is to retrieve data from remote monitoring sites and work with global water serial loggers who use specific software to get readings from the sensors. It is also a cost-effective and flexible method of communication as it transmits analog, digital, and pulse counter data that spreads across large areas without the need for cables.

Therefore, commercial and defense purposes highly demand the use remote radio telemetry. Technavio expects it to have the highest growth potential and constitute the largest market share during the forecast period.

Implementation of microsatellites

Governments are looking for cheaper alternative methods as defense budgets are being scaled down, and multi-billion-dollar military satellite programs are being called off. One such alternative is the implementation of microsatellites to perform various functions (GPS navigation, communication, surveillance, and earth imagery), which were traditionally done by expensive large satellite systems. These microsatellites weigh between 22-220 pounds. They are 10 times cheaper than conventional satellites and are faster to build and launch. These systems are manufactured by commercial-of-the-shelf (COTS) technology for a plug-and-play approach to constructing microsatellite.

“Apart from being cheaper and faster, these microsatellites can be used for missions such as the configuration of communication node constellation or in-orbit survey of larger satellites, which could not be accomplished using traditional satellites. These can also be used as anti-satellite weapons to terminate hostile satellites,” says Arushi.
