Technavio’s latest report on the global haptic technology market 2016-2020 provides an analysis on the most significant trends expected to impact the global haptic technology market through 2020. Technavio defines an emerging trend as a factor that has the potential to significantly impact the market and contribute to its growth or decline.
The global haptic technology market is expected to grow at a CAGR of over 11% during 2016-2020. Automotive and consumer electronics are the two major sectors that employ this technology. These sectors account for over 92% of the market share in terms of revenue.
Sunil Kumar Singh, a lead analyst for computing devicesat Technavio, says, “In the automotive sector, the usage of haptics to provide unique user interface solutions has increased. In the consumer electronics sector, the market will grow primarily due to the introduction of haptics by Apple in its smartwatch and 6S iPhones. By 2020, HD haptics is expected to be incorporated into most mobile devices (smartphones and tablets) and wearables, thus driving market growth further.”
The top four emerging trends in the global haptic technology market according to Technavio’s research analysts are:
High usage of touch screens
Touch screens are an important medium for haptic technology. This technology has huge potential in the smartphone sector, as a majority of smartphones introduced in the market are equipped with touch screen interfaces. In September 2015, Apple launched its updated version called the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus with haptic touch feedback, thus driving the demand for haptic technology for touch screens. Haptics-enabled touch screens provide synchronized sound and graphics upon touch, enhancing the consumer experience.
The increase in automobiles manufactured with touch screens for navigational and entertainment purposes will also boost the market during the forecast period. “Touch screens in cars are expected to take up multiple functions such as climate control, car lights, windscreen wipers, sunroof, and seat adjustment, all of which will be enabled by the use of haptics technology,” says Sunil.
Haptics for wearables
Wearable electronics such as smart bands and smartwatches that integrate haptics have generated significant interest among users. The compatibility of wearable devices with other consumer electronic devices such as media players, headsets, smartphones, and tablets, with Bluetooth and Near Field Communication (NFC) connectivity capabilities, is one of the major reasons for the huge interest in wearables. These devices enable non-auditory communication and track the activity level of the user such as calories burned, distance traveled, and sleep quality.
Samsung is already using haptic technology in its Gear 2, Gear Fit, and Galaxy Gear smartwatches. In 2015, Apple introduced its smartwatch integrated with its patented haptic technology.
Emergence of ultra-haptics
An abundance of research is currently taking place to create systems that will form 3D virtual objects that can be seen and felt in the air. Researchers in Japan have already created a floating 3D holographic plasma display with haptic feedback.
Another major use of ultra-haptic displays could be for NFC, where a 3D holographic image is projected as people pass by a store. This will allow users to see all the deals, offers, and discounts available by simply logging into apps such as FOURSQUARE on a holographic display. This application of ultra-haptics is expected to boost the market for haptics by 2016.
Next-generation smart material actuator technologies
The evolution of next-generation smart material actuator technologies such as electrostatic, dielectric electroactive polymer (EAP), electromagnetic pulse (EMP), and piezoceramic have enabled vendors to improve touch screens to emulate different textures.
When a user texts or dials a number using their mobile phone screen, they get bit of vibration in return because of tactile feedback technology. To overcome this challenge, vendors have created electrostatic-based haptic feedback, where the vibration is felt only at the place where users tap their finger.
The majority of touch-enabled mobile devices support multiple finger gestures such as pinching, rotating with multiple fingers, and swiping. These features are easily enabled with actuator technologies like dielectric EAP, EMP, and piezoceramic, which are ultra-thin, ultra-lightweight, and easy to integrate. They provide an ideal platform for manufacturers to develop haptic technologies that can support localized haptic implementation, such as localized vibrations and deformations.
Some of the top vendors in the haptic technology market, researched by Technavio analysts are:
