Elementary students at St. Paul’s and Fountain Wood elementary schools in Burlington, NJ and the French American School in Princeton, NJ received an unusual science lesson during National Chemistry Week October 18-24, as part of Chemistry Connection®, Solvay’s international hands-on education program. This year’s National Chemistry Week (NCW) theme, “Chemistry Colors Our World”, focuses on the chemistry of food colors and fireworks, rainbows, natural dyes and pigments, and more.
Local research chemists from Solvay’s Bristol laboratory and other Solvay Chemistry Connection® ambassadors gave students insight into chemistry as they conducted extraordinary science experiments using ordinary household products. The ambassadors reached close to 500 students in recognition of The American Chemical Society’s annual event to explore how “Chemistry Colors Our World”.
Solvay is proud to motivate and inspire the scientists and engineers of tomorrow by promoting science education today and showing students that science is fun.
Chemistry Connection® demonstrates the countless ways chemistry touches our lives, in the foods we eat, the clothes we wear, and the medications we take.
The program was established in 1989 to promote science education in elementary schools particularly third, fourth and fifth grades. Chemistry Connection ambassadors teach students about science through hands-on experiments.
“Encouraging elementary- and middle-school students to explore the sciences is essential to highlight the importance of science and connect its relevance to students’ lives and their future,” explains Francine Palmer, Solvay’s research director at its Research and Innovation Center in Bristol, PA.
To date, more than 250 Solvay employees have been trained as Chemistry Connection® ambassadors for the program, which has reached more than 505,000 students in the United States, Canada and France.
