Silicon Space Technology (SST) Announces Industry-First CMOS-Based Product Exceeding 2,500 Hours of Successful No-Error Operation at 250°C

April 27, 2015 | By Business Wire News

AUSTIN, Texas

SST announced today the successful ongoing testing of temperature-hardened 18Mb SRAM based on HARDSIL®technology operating at 250°C now for more than 2,500 hours. This achievement represents approximately 125 trillion bit reads without an error and no fluctuations in current consumption at this extreme operating temperature – making it a significant, industry-first milestone and continuing to raise the bar for electronics reliability and longevity for difficult environments and applications.

The continued progress and performance of SST’s 18Mb SRAM demonstrates the underlying HARDSILtechnology and its applicability to enhance any CMOS-based product for increased operating temperature and reliability. Markets that will benefit from HARDSIL-enhanced products include oil & gas, aerospace, automotive engine control, industrial automation, Smart Grid infrastructure, high-performance computing and more.

“SST’s HARDSIL CMOS process continues to prove itself in extreme and high-temperature environments with the release of over 2,500 hours of high-temperature, zero-device failure test data at 250°C,” said Harold Synder, senior scientist and consultant with Physical Solutions Group. “Unlike more costly silicon on insulator processes, SST’s HARDSIL CMOS employs a buried guard ring to eliminate latchup and promises a fast and lower cost path to highly-integrated SOCs for high-temperature electronics solutions.”

“Our 18Mb SRAM is part of our growing portfolio of computing solutions that operate successfully above 200°C, leading to lifetimes far exceeding those of commercial or even industrial products,” said Bernd Lienhard, chief executive officer of SST. “These latest results further validate the applicability of HARDSILtechnology in enhancing parts with greater heat resistance – making them more reliable and increasing longevity – for both environments that operate at extreme temperatures (>200°C) and even more so for any application that operates at lower temperatures (125°C – 175°C).”

About Silicon Space Technology

SST is a privately held, fabless semiconductor company based in Austin, TX that provides integrated temperature-hardened (125°C – 250°C) and radiation-hardened (>300 Krads, latchup immune) solutions for extreme applications in the oil & gas, space, automotive, aerospace and medical industries as well as broader applications like industrial automation and high-performance computing. Patented HARDSIL technology delivers proven, industry-leading hardening in a number of products – including ARM® Cortex® processors and SRAMs — at the CMOS process-level while increasing overall product reliability and longevity. As a result of SST’s unique technologies, products and licensing solutions, system engineers are able to extend the limits of what’s possible in designing ruggedized and broader electronics for today’s – and tomorrow’s – extreme and difficult environments.
