“The September employment report was even better than expected, reflecting the region’s surprisingly robust economic vitality,” said Phil Blair, executive officer of the staffing firm Manpower San Diego. “While last month’s national jobs report was disappointing, hiring levels were just the opposite in San Diego, with outstanding job growth driven by our construction, manufacturing, and technology sectors.”

The region’s 4.6 percent jobless level is 1.5 points lower than a year ago and 0.5 points lower than August 2015.

San Diego’s labor force increased by 22,300 jobs from a year ago, with a decrease in unemployment of 21,900 over the same period, an indicator of increasing employment growth. The region’s private employment growth accounted for 91.5 percent of all employment increases.

Based on the state’s monthly reports, the San Diego Regional EDC conducts its own analysis of the region’s current economic status. The EDC report is presented by Manpower San Diego.
