Research and Markets (http://www.researchandmarkets.com/research/g7jzsn/smart_textiles) has announced the addition of the “Smart Textiles Market by Type, Function, Industry, & Geography – Global Forecast to 2020” report to their offering.

The global smart textiles market was valued at USD 795 Million in 2014 and is expected to reach USD 4.72 Billion by 2020, at a CAGR of 33.58% between 2015 and 2020.

The smart textiles market has seen a considerable evolution in the recent years, with a transition from passive to active smart and ultra-smart fabrics. First generation passive fabrics were proficient of only sensing environmental stimuli, while active fabrics include components such as sensors, actuators and a control unit which can sense thermal, electrical, and other stimuli; the third generation of smart fabrics known as ultra-smart fabrics can sense, react, and adapt to environmental conditions or stimuli. Ultra-smart fabrics essentially consist of a unit; which works like a brain- with cognition, reasoning, and activating capacities.

Smart textiles in the military and protection sector accounted for the largest share of about 27% of the total market. However, the market for the sports and fitness segment is expected to grow at the highest CAGR of 40.30% between 2015 and 2020.

Major drivers identified for the growth of the smart textiles market are growing trends in the wearable electronics market, increasing popularity of sophisticated gadgets with advanced functions, miniaturization of electronic components, and rapid growth of low-cost smart wireless sensor networks. In May 2015, Google Inc. (U.S.) partnered with Levi Strauss & Co. (U.S.) to bring their microfiber-woven textile, called Jacquard to market in 2016.

Google’s Advanced Technology and Projects (ATAP) group developed a fabric interlaced with microfibers that have digital sensing abilities and can network with devices including smartphones. This development is a major leap forward for the growth of the market. There are also some factors high costs, lack of exhaustive standards and regulations which are restraining the growth of the market.
