Research and Markets: Plastics in Brazil – State of the Industry Report

Brazil now has more than 11,600 companies in plastics processing, of which more than 93 percent self-identify as small or micro-companies (99 employees or less), according to 2012 employment data analyzed by the Brazilian Plastics Industry Association (Abiplast).

With roughly 50 percent of the nation’s plastics-related companies and 50 percent of the sector’s total employment, São Paulo is far and away the most important state in Brazil for plastics. A hub for the industry can be found in what’s known as the ABCD Paulista region, which includes Santo Andre, São Bernardo do Campo, São Caetano do Sul and Diadema.

This group of satellite cities surrounding the São Paulo capital has been made a focal area for plastics development since 2010, when local government, the Brazilian Industrial Development Agency (ABDI) and São Paulo’s lead union for plastics signed a of trading partners, with 60 percent of its total exports made up of manufactured and semi manufactured goods.

Mercosul, an economic and political agreement that includes Argentina, Paraguay, Uraguay and Brazil, promotes free trade and easy transit of goods, people and currency.

Brazil is also one of the leading players in the World Trade Organization’s Doha Development Round negotiations for discussion on lowering trade barriers around to world to boost global trade. However, discussions has been stalled due to differences between EU, US, Japan and other developing countries, including Brazil.
