Research and Markets (http://www.researchandmarkets.com/research/7gnmtt/lyondellbasells) has announced the addition of the “LyondellBasell’s New Bimodal Polyethylene Process: The Ultimate Evolution” report to their offering.

LyondellBasell is a leading developer and licensor of polyolefin production technologies, offering a range of advanced processes for both polypropylene and polyethylene. Its Spheripol PP process is by far the most widely licensed PP technology, and is now joined by the highly versatile Spherizone PP process, the only really different PP technology to be introduced to the industry in the last 35-40 years. In high pressure PE technologies, LyondellBasell’s Lupotech T process is the global leader, and in low pressure PE, its Hostalen ACP HDPE process is the global leader in the production of high performance bimodal HDPE resins. It also licenses the economical gas phase fluid bed Spherilene S and Spherilene C process for mono-and bi-modal LLDPE and HDPE, respectively.

In short, LyondellBasell is a very strong licensor of polyolefin process technologies. The popularity of the CSTR diluent slurry Hostalen ACP process in the first decade of this century was driven by its ability to make high performance HDPEs for production of PE100 pipe, for which LyondellBasell was the European and world market leader. Bimodality in molecular weight and composition is essential for such grades: a lower molecular weight mode for processability, and a high molecular weight copolymer mode for physical strength and crack resistance.

The ACP process added a third very high molecular weight mode for control of such arcane properties as sag and die-swell, characteristics that, with the right control, lend specific and desired behavior during melt processing. Two-reactor bimodal processes do not have control through this third mode.
