Reimbursements Now Available For Home Patient Health Monitoring

September 23, 2015 | By Business Wire News

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz.

Just a few years ago, although companies like CJPS Medical Systems were already offering Remote Patient Monitoring equipment to monitor newly discharged patients and chronically ill individuals, healthcare providers justified the investment in such systems based on better care, better patient outcome, and reduction in nursing costs.

Today, there are three sources of healthcare reimbursements for Telehealth:

  1. 28 states and the District of Columbia have active laws that require private health insurers to pay for telehealth, and on par with face-to-face care.
  2. In addition, 47 states provide telehealth coverage to the poorest population through Medicaid programs.
  3. Most importantly, since July 2015, the U.S. Federal Government has started approving telehealth reimbursement codes for Medicare recipients, which represent the great majority of telehealth users, under the same conditions as in-person health services. To receive Medicare reimbursements for telemedicine, various requirements apply such as Interactive audio-video telecommunications must be used. Typically, the patients must be located in a rural location. Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) codes such as 99490 ($42.60) and 99090 / 99091 ($56.92) can be bundled together and provide almost $100 per patient per month to the healthcare provider, which does not require the patient to be present.

In addition, telehealth systems such as VitalPoint® HOME even provide reimbursable electrocardiograms (ECGs), free live interactive audio video, medication compliance data, and unique disease-specific measurements and data.

“We are pleased to see that more and more third-party payers have decided to reimburse for Telehealth,” says C. Sevrain, President of CJPS Medical Systems. “Our remote patient monitoring system is intended to provide better, yet lower-cost, care to most patients.”

Indeed, a complete remote patient monitoring system, including the actual patient monitor and the associated EMR software can be purchased and used for as low as $45 per patient per month. Since these reimbursement codes allow for payments of almost $100 per patient per month, caregivers who used to be unable to afford such systems, are no longer able to afford to ignore such life-changing technologies.
