Redpine Signals Announces Multi-Protocol Wireless Connectivity Support in Mini PCIe Form Factor for IoT Devices

July 21, 2015 | By Business Wire News

SAN JOSE, Calif.

Redpine Signals today announced the availability of a new range of wireless connectivity modules from its M2Mcombo family of products for IoT devices. The new PCIe mini card wireless expansion board based on Redpine’s convergence wireless chipset allows the offering of wireless connectivity options that include simultaneous 802.11n Wi-Fi Access Point and Client modes, dual-mode BT 4.0, and IEEE 802.15.4 ZigBee, over USB. Operating in the 2.4 or the 5 GHz bands, the module permits the easy integration of wireless connectivity into IoT Gateway solutions. With industrial grade specifications for operational environment, performance and reliability, the module addresses the connectivity needs of IoT adoption in industrial deployments. The integration of multiple wireless protocols within a single device simplifies the implementation of coexistence measures when wireless connections are simultaneously operational.

“Devices and systems in the Internet of Things space use different connectivity protocols to support the underlying application. Our multi-protocol convergence connectivity solution with support for dual band Wi-Fi®, dual-mode Bluetooth® 4.0 (Classic Bluetooth and Bluetooth Smart) and ZigBee® enables seamless connectivity between IoT devices and the cloud,” said Venkat Mattela, CEO of Redpine Signals. “By integrating multiple wireless protocols on to the same chip, Redpine’s solution not only provides an outstanding customer value for cost but also removes complex co-existence issues present in wireless communication.”

IoT gateways are often required to handle a variety of devices that connect using Wi-Fi, BT Classic, BT Low Energy, or ZigBee, and Redpine’s M2MCombo module family uniquely offers these protocols in a single device, reducing cost and integration complexity. Redpine’s highly integrated devices implement wireless protocol handling as well as fine-grained coexistence mechanisms in hardware and firmware form within the device, at the same time reducing load on the host processor. With technology that is matured over 14 years and deployed in diverse areas through over 1000 customer products, Redpine’s solution is the ideal solution for IoT devices. Redpine’s Half Mini PCIe cards are available now with a price of sub-$20 for 10,000 units.

About Redpine Signals

Headquartered in San Jose, California, Redpine Signals, Inc., is a fabless semiconductor, M2M devices and wireless system solutions company focusing on innovative, ultra-low power and high-performance products for next-generation wireless applications. Redpine was founded in 2001 and was the first in the industry to launch an ultra low power and low-cost single-stream 802.11n chipset in late 2007. Again, in 2009 Redpine pioneered the adoption of self-contained 802.11n modules into the then emerging M2M market. In 2013, Redpine introduced the world’s first multiprotocol wireless chipset for the Internet of Things market – featuring Wi-Fi, dual-mode BT 4.0, and ZigBee. Redpine has created multiple products based on this chipset including n-Link (hosted), Connect-io-n (embedded) and WiSeConnect (advanced embedded) modules. Redpine offers technology and products covering multiple market segments in the IoT (industrial, medical, automotive, connected home, smart energy, building automation and real-time locationing), mobile and networking markets. Redpine’s technology and product portfolio includes chipsets, modules and devices with multi-stream 802.11n, 802.11ac, dual mode Bluetooth® 4.0 and ZigBee® wireless connectivity. The company has more than 200 employees worldwide.
