Pure Air Essential For Peak Athletic Performance Says AtmosAir CEO

Steve Levine, Chief Executive Officer of AtmosAir, told the annual Green Sports Alliance Summit today that the realization that the cleanest possible air is essential for peak athletic performance has grown dramatically.

“Heads of athletic training facilities, such as those for the Dallas Cowboys, Jacksonville Jaguars, Kansas City Chiefs, and the New England Patriots, want to make their training environments conducive to healthier players,” Levine said.

Clean Air Spurs Performance

Levine notes that data from tests in recent years show that breathing clear air maximizes performance.

A 2005 study at the University of Edinburgh found that the blood vessels of 30 exercise bike riders who breathed diesel exhaust-laden air for 30 minutes were abnormally dilated – “the ideal conditions for a heart attack,” according to cardiology professor Dr. David Newby.
A 2012 study by Graff Zivin and Michael Neidell at Columbia University’s Mailman School for Public Health found that a 10-parts-per-billion decrease in harmful ozone concentrations led to a 5.5 increase in productivity by agricultural workers.
And when Jamie Mullins at the University of Massachusetts studied 4,299 outdoor collegiate track and field meets from January 2005 through mid-2013, he found that a one percent increase in the ozone level translated into a disadvantage of nearly 22 seconds in men’s times in 1,500 meter races.

Keeping Training Facilities Healthy

In athletic training facilities, Levine notes, infections like staph and MRSA are increasing dramatically, along with fears about asthma and allergies in the locker room.

Levine’s company, AtmosAir, offers a bi-polar ionization system that scrubs and disinfects the air in four practice facilities and locker rooms. He noted that the Dallas Cowboys are installing the system in its new $300 million world headquarters in Frisco, TX, scheduled to open in August.

“When you look hard at making sports increasingly green,” Levine said, “you also have to consider the fans who support athletic competitions. Someone who shells out for a ticket at an indoor sporting event also has the right to breathe clean air.”

Levine noted that at the 20,000-seat Staples Arena in Los Angeles, the AtmosAir system has eliminated 98 percent of the volatile organic compounds from the inside air.
