Ohio Gains Manufacturing Jobs for a Fourth Straight Year

EVANSTON, Ill.

Manufacturers’ News, Inc./– Ohio added manufacturing jobs for a fourth straight year, reports the 2016 Ohio Manufacturers Directory^®, an industrial database and directory published by Manufacturers’ News, Inc. (MNI) Evanston, IL. According to MNI’s database of manufacturers, Ohio gained 9,742 industrial jobs from September 2014 to September 2015, or 1.1%.

Ohio is now home to 16,875 manufacturers employing 888,865 workers. MNI reports the state’s industrial employment levels rose 3.2% between September 2011 and September 2014.

“Ohio’s industrial base has achieved a remarkable turnaround following the recession’s steep losses, particularly in the all-important auto sector,” says Tom Dubin, President of the Evanston, IL-based publishing company, which has been surveying industry since 1912. “With its ease of logistics, favorable business climate, and top-notch incentive programs, the state continues to make large strides toward recovery.”

MNI reports gains were led by the transportation equipment industry, which increased 3.6% over the year and has climbed steadily over the past four years, adding a total of 9,370 jobs or 11%. Transportation equipment now ranks as the state’s third largest sector by number of jobs, employing 92,127.

Industrial machinery, the state’s top sector by number of jobs, was unchanged over the year at 144,950 jobs. The second-ranked fabricated metals industry accounts for 105,704 jobs, up 1.8% over the survey period.

Other industries adding jobs included rubber/plastics, up 5.8%; food products, up 4%; and chemicals, up 3.8%.

Manufacturing jobs in Cincinnati climbed 1.3% over the year, with the first-ranked city home to 75,237 industrial workers. Jobs declined 1% in second-ranked Cleveland to 59,078 jobs.
