Robert Coward, MPR Principal Officer, was elected as the American Nuclear Society’s (ANS) Vice President/President-Elect by a vote of ANS membership at its Annual Meeting held this week. Mr. Coward, nominated by a committee of industry leaders, was one of three members on the ballot. Mr. Coward will immediately transition to this role, serving a one year term as Vice President/President-Elect and assume the role of President of ANS in June 2017.
“I am honored and pleased to accept this role,” Mr. Coward said. “To be among such a talented group, during such an important time for the energy industry, I’m eager to work with current President Andy Klein and the rest of the ANS leadership to communicate and advocate ANS’ strong message advancing and promoting nuclear science and technology, as well as promote the professional development of the great people in the industry.”
Formed in 1954, ANS is a not-for-profit, international, scientific and educational organization. It was established by a group of individuals who recognized the need to unify the professional activities within the various fields of nuclear science and technology. American Nuclear Society’s 11,000 members include engineers, scientists, administrators, and educators representing more than 1,600 corporations, educational institutions, and government agencies.
“I have known Bob Coward since I joined MPR in 1986. He has always had a reputation as a smart, highly capable engineer,” Robert Carritte, MPR Principal Officer said. “It has been an existential pleasure watching Bob grow as an exceptional leader over the past decade. The nuclear profession and the ANS executive leadership will truly benefit from Bob’s energy, creativity, and leadership.”
Mr. Coward joined MPR in 1983, from Duke University, and has been an MPR Principal Officer since 2009. Previously, he was the Director of MPR’s Nuclear Services Group, responsible for the overall direction and management of MPR’s services provided to the domestic and international nuclear industries. The emphasis of Mr. Coward’s work has been in the areas of project management, new nuclear power plant development, regulatory affairs, and safety analysis.
