MPR’s Dr. Douglas M. Chapin Honored with ANS’ Don Miller Award

ALEXANDRIA, Va.

MPR’s (www.mpr.com) Dr. Douglas M. Chapin, was named the recipient of the 2014 Don Miller Award. Hailed as an honor of outstanding achievement, the Don Miller Award, presented by the American Nuclear Society (ANS), recognizes those who have made contributions to nuclear instrumentation and control or human machine interface technologies.

“Nominees for this award are the best in the field, and to be selected from the distinguished few is an incredible achievement,” Paul Damerell, MPR Principal Officer said.

With more than fifty years of experience, Dr. Chapin is widely recognized throughout industry and academia as an expert and innovator in nuclear power. His experience is renowned, with significant practice in plant upgrade, uprate and life extension projects for both domestic and international power plants, digital instrumentation & control (DI&C) systems, and decommissioning and decontamination.

Dr. Chapin began his career with Naval Reactors in 1962. Reaching the rank of Lieutenant, he led the electrical instrumentation and control systems for the world’s first deep diving research submarine, NR-1. Joining MPR in 1968, Dr. Chapin has worked on projects for a majority of U.S. nuclear power plants and has greatly impacted international plant development.

A respected engineer, Dr. Chapin participates in industry and government initiatives, has testified before the U.S. Senate Energy & Natural Resources Committee, and was Principal Investigator for tasks funded by the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Research Division. In 1994 Dr. Chapin became a Fellow of the American Nuclear Society. He chaired the U.S. National Research Council study on Application of Digital Instrumentation and Control Technologies to Nuclear Power Plant Operation and Safety (1995-97). He is a member of both the U.S. National Academy of Engineering and the Society of Sigma Xi, and has been a member of the Nuclear Reactor Technology subcommittee of the DOE- Nuclear Energy Advisory Council since 2002.

Dr. Chapin received his PhD, Nuclear Studies in Chemical Engineering, from Princeton University in 1968. He obtained his M.S. from George Washington University and his B.S. from Duke University.

Dr. Chapin was just presented with his newest honor at the ninth International Topical Meeting in North Carolina. The Don Miller Award is symbolized with an engraved plaque which reads: In recognition of outstanding accomplishments in the field of instrumentation, control, and human- machine interface technologies.
