Missouri Manufacturing Job Growth Stalls

EVANSTON, Ill.

Manufacturers’ News, Inc.– Industrial employment growth in Missouri stalled over the past year, reports the 2016 Missouri Manufacturers Register®, an industrial database and directory published by Manufacturers’ News, Inc. (MNI) Evanston, IL. According to MNI’s database of manufacturers, Missouri shed 1,397 industrial jobs from August 2014 to August 2015, about a third of a percent, its first loss since the 2010-2011 survey period.

MNI reports Missouri is now home to 7,559 manufacturers employing 362,014 workers.

“Like many states, Missouri is struggling with depressed global markets and stronger dollar, which is putting a dent in manufacturing employment growth,” says Tom Dubin, President of the Evanston, IL-based publishing company, which has been surveying industry since 1912. “However, the state’s solid infrastructure and business-friendly environment is helping many industries thrive in the state, especially the transportation equipment sector, which continues to see healthy post-recession growth.”

MNI reports employment in transportation equipment increased 7.6% between August 2010 and August 2015, recovering 27% of the 11,879 jobs lost during the recession. Transportation equipment currently ranks as the state’s top sector by number of jobs, employing 45,145, up 1.7% from a year ago.

Food processing, the state’s top sector by number of jobs, also helped to offset losses, up 1% over the year to its current level of 52,128.

Losses were reported in printing/publishing, down 3.9%; stone/clay/glass, down 2%; fabricated metals, down 1.5%; industrial machinery, down 1.5% and chemical processing, down 1.2%.

Manufacturing jobs in St. Louis held steady over the year, and declined a half percent in Kansas City.
