Materion Doubles Capacity for ToughMet® Alloys Used in Consumer Electronics

Materion Performance Alloys, a Materion Corporation (NYSE:MTRN) business, has more than doubled its capacity to produce foil gauge ToughMet alloys that are used to make the company’s BrushForm 158 strip product line. BF 158 products, which are available in various tempers, are widely used in the consumer electronics market, particularly for camera module components in smartphones and tablets. Over the past six months, the company has increased operations in its Reading, Pennsylvania, and Elmore and Lorain, Ohio, plants to meet growing demands for its BrushForm strip products.

Materion first introduced BF158 products in 2010 to fill the need for higher strength materials for miniaturization of voice coil motor and optical image stabilizing components in electronic devices. BF158 products provide optimal high-strength properties and corrosion resistance in gauges as thin as .000984 inches, giving engineers greater flexibility to design smaller, thinner devices with improved functionality. BF158 TM16, a new temper released earlier this year, offers the highest strength properties available in a copper alloy. BF158 alloys have been proven to outperform other copper alloys, including copper titanium, in applications with high strength/high temperature/corrosion resistant requirements.

“With the announcement by Mitsubishi Metecs that they would exit the copper strip alloy market earlier this year, we started preparing our plants for higher production,” says Glenn Maxwell, President of the Performance Metals Group at Materion. “The increased operations have allowed us to significantly reduce our global lead times and ensure supply of one of our top selling product lines in the consumer electronics market. The market can count on Materion to continue to increase capacity to meet their needs.”
