SANTA CLARA, Calif.

Intevac Incorporated (NASDAQ:IVAC), a leading supplier of thin-film deposition equipment and photonics products is pleased to announce the release of the INTEVAC VERTEX™ (Vertex) Physical Vapor Deposition (PVD) System. Vertex has been optimized to apply a protective thin-film coating over glass and targets the fast growing mobile electronic display cover glass, glass protector and mobile enclosure markets. The Vertex architecture implements a compact modular design concept enabling tremendous flexibility in the number and variety of coatings the tool is capable of depositing.

“At Truly Opto-electronics (Truly), we pride ourselves in providing the latest and most cost effective technologies to our customers. We believe Intevac’s Vertex PVD tool along with the protective coating it deposits on display cover glass is consistent with this charter as it provides the best commercial solution for the prevention of scratch and breakage. Truly looks forward to installing the Vertex PVD tool within our production environment and implementing this revolutionary technology for our mobile electronics customers,” said Mr. Ben Chan, Product Director – Truly Opto-electronics.

Applications

The Intevac Vertex system implements a highly flexible modular design concept for multiple film types in a single system. Intevac’s initial coating product for Vertex provides an optically transparent hard protective coating targeting display cover glass typically found on consumer electronic products such as mobile phones, mobile computing devices (tablet computers), wearable electronics and automotive infotainment systems. Typically, these types of displays employ a hardened glass substrate which must be processed in its final dimensional configuration. Capitalizing on its vast experience with small substrate processing from its market leadership position in HDD media coating, Intevac optimized the Vertex PVD system for the mobile display electronics market.

Optimized Design

Intevac has a tradition of designing its capital equipment to maximize throughput while minimizing footprint to reduce use of costly factory floor space. The Vertex system carries on with this legacy of product design, having been optimized to vertically sputter at very high throughput for individualized substrates in a very compact footprint. Furthermore, the Vertex system employs Intevac’s industry leading high target utilization technology to minimize material cost and reduce preventive maintenance. All of this innovation drives an extremely low cost of ownership (CoO) and increased profitability for Intevac’s customers.

“The Vertex system enables manufacturers of electronic systems such as mobile phones, automotive infotainment systems and wearables to apply protective and visually enhancing thin-films with superior quality, high volumes at low cost points as compared to other approaches. With the Vertex system, Intevac has successfully diversified its product offerings in the equipment space to address some of the highest volume and fastest growing markets within the mobile consumer electronics industry,” said Jay Cho, executive vice president and general manager – Intevac Thin-Film Equipment business.

As previously announced, the Vertex system is currently in qualification by Tier 1 customers. Intevac is now releasing the Vertex tool for general availability.
