Intertek Addresses the Impact of Sweeteners on Human Gastrointestinal Health at IFT Annual Conference Symposium

July 7, 2015 | By Business Wire News

MISSISSAUGA, Ontario

Intertek, a leading provider of quality services to industries worldwide, speaks to the industry about low-calorie sweeteners and their impact on gastrointestinal health.

Low calorie sweeteners (LCS), are often added to food and beverages as substitutes for sugar, and have been determined as safe by food safety assessment authorities across the globe. The substances have been extensively investigated in studies for a wide range of safety endpoints. A recently published study raised concerns of the impact LCS may have on the human gut microbiome and whether they have the ability to induce glucose intolerance.

The Institute of Food Technologists’ (IFT) annual conference is an opportunity for those involved in food science to come together to collaborate and share new insights in the field. Intertek Scientific & Regulatory Consultancy has organized a symposium session to discuss sweeteners and gastrointestinal health. The symposium will be held at the IFT Annual Conference in Chicago Illinois, on Sunday July 12th, 2015, from 10:30 am to 12:00 pm (Conference Room S405).

Dr. Ashley Roberts, an accomplished regulatory toxicologist within Intertek Life Sciences states, “The purpose of the symposium is to provide an in-depth analysis of the current understanding of how LCS interact with human gut microbiota and whether there are health concerns. This is a valuable learning experience and unique opportunity that brings together some of the leading experts in this area to discuss a very important topic.”

Following presentations by Dr. V. Lee Grotz on “Sweetener Safety Evaluation Process” and Dr. Ian Rowland on “LCS Consumption and Potential Effects on Microbiota”, Dr. Ashley Roberts will be discussing the methodological details related to the publication in question, as well as other studies.
