IHS CERAWeek Selects Alphabet Energy as a 2015 Energy Innovation Pioneer

By Business Wire News

Alphabet Energy, the global leader in thermoelectrics for waste heat recovery, today announced that it has been named an Energy Innovation Pioneer by IHS Energy and will be featured at CERAWeek, the preeminent international gathering of energy industry leaders, experts, innovators and policymakers.

Now in its 10th year, the Energy Innovation Pioneers program recognizes companies and CEOs who are developing technologies and delivering products to transform the energy future. IHS analysts screened hundreds of energy companies from around the world and named Alphabet Energy and 16 other companies to its list based on the companies’ invention and creativity, feasibility and timeliness, scalability and quality of management team.

“The Alphabet Energy team and I are honored to be included as one of the 2015 Energy Innovation Pioneers,” said Dr. Matthew Scullin, co-founder and CEO, Alphabet Energy. “Six years ago we shared a vision for an industrial waste heat recovery product and in 2014 we delivered the E1, the first industrial thermoelectric generator to convert waste heat into electricity. Forward-thinking customers in U.S. oil and gas, mining and manufacturing know that nearly $8 billion in operating spend is wasted every year in the form of exhaust heat; they now turn to Alphabet Energy to derive value from this valuable resource.”

Last month, the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Oak Ridge National Laboratory and ICF International released the Waste Heat to Power Market Assessment. The report outlines cost improvement opportunities for U.S. industry, including the fact that gas pipeline operators in the U.S. could generate over 1,100,000 kWe from the exhaust heat lost in pipeline operations. Poised to reap more benefits from waste heat recovery than any other state, Texas-based industry could generate more than 1,500,000 kWe from its exhaust.

“Alphabet Energy is developing innovative products that address key industry pain points,” said Kristian Bodek, chair, CERAWeek Energy Innovation Pioneers. “The CERAWeek community consists of more than 2,800 energy industry decision-makers from over 50 countries. Given this year’s backdrop of the recent decline in oil prices, we’re confident that delegates will be eager to learn how Alphabet Energy is helping energy-intensive industries generate reliable remote power while reducing fuel consumption, operating costs and carbon emissions.”

As part of the 2015 Energy Innovation Pioneers program, Dr. Scullin will participate in two speaking engagements at the CERAWeek conference in Houston, Texas:

  • Energy Insight Breakfast, Wednesday, April 22 at 7:30 a.m.; and
  • Pioneer Showcase, Wednesday, April 22 at 10:30 a.m.

About Alphabet Energy
Alphabet Energy makes waste heat valuable. The company commercializes thermoelectric-based waste heat recovery products that turn waste heat from exhaust into electricity. Leveraging nanotechnology research from Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and Michigan State and with over 60 patents issued and filed, the company’s E1 Thermoelectric Generator (E1) offers reliable power generation for remote operations at gathering-line compressor stations and upstream production sites. The E1 attaches to the exhaust pipes of diesel- and natural gas-powered engines and gensets and converts exhaust heat directly into electricity, reducing fuel consumption, operating costs and carbon emissions. Other energy-intensive industries including manufacturing, transportation and defense also look to Alphabet Energy for the newest technologies in energy recovery. Learn more at
