IEEE Standards Association Conformity Assessment Program Announces First Telecommunications Equipment Vendor Certifications

July 7, 2015 | By Business Wire News

PISCATAWAY, N.J.

IEEE, the world’s largest professional organization dedicated to advancing technology for humanity, today announced Cisco Systems and Huawei Technologies as recipients of the first certifications delivered by the IEEE 1588™ Telecommunications Certification Program. These certifications represent a significant milestone for the IEEE Standards Association (IEEE-SA), since they are the first to award an “IEEE Certified” mark that will be licensed for use on products conformant to an IEEE standard.

“The IEEE 1588 Telecommunications Certification Program has reached an important milestone with the certification of products from notable and industry-leading players such as Cisco Systems and Huawei Technologies,” said Adam Newman, senior director, Business Development and Alliance Management, IEEE-SA. “By recognizing these companies, the IEEE-SA, with our test laboratory partner, Iometrix, underscores the importance and value of this program to the industry.”

The IEEE 1588 Telecommunications Certification Program, developed to validate the conformance of IEEE 1588-20081 implementations in telecommunications environments when using the Precision Time Protocol Telecom Profile for Frequency Synchronization defined in the Recommendation ITU-T G.8265.1, focuses on the requirements for synchronization in high growth, packet-based, mobile backhaul networks. The program’s Technical Review Committee composed of industry subject matter experts, recently completed the IEEE 1588 Test Suite’s extensive review process. The IEEE 1588 program’s authorized test laboratory, Iometrix, which is accredited by A2LA to ISO/IEC 17025, performed the testing.

Also, the IEEE 1588 Telecommunications Certification Program opened a new pilot phase testing enhancement covered in the Precision Time Protocol Telecom Profile for Phase/Time Synchronization with Full Timing Support from the Network defined in ITU-T G.8275.1, a key feature required for many current and upcoming wireless 4G technologies deployments. Please contact Iometrix (http://www.iometrix.com/) to participate in the pilot phase testing, or, for more information on this new enhancement to the IEEE 1588 program, please visit http://standards.ieee.org/about/icap/1588-2008.html.

“Standards are a strategic requirement for service providers as they want interoperable products,” stated Michael Howard, senior research director of carrier networks at IHS/Infonetics Research. “It is an industry and IEEE-SA milestone to achieve IEEE’s first certifications of conformance to IEEE 1588-2008 via a formalized testing program. This program fills an industry demand, proven by the participation and testing results of Cisco Systems and Huawei Technologies.”

“Awarding the first certificates as part of the IEEE 1588 Telecommunications Certification Program is the culmination of years of stakeholder engagement across industry,” said Dr. John Eidson, co-chair of the IEEE 1588 working group and member of the IEEE-SA Conformity Assessment Program (ICAP) 1588 Technical Review Committee. “This program fulfills a gap in the marketplace by offering buyers of IEEE 1588 solutions a way to determine IEEE 1588 compliance in advance of making a purchase.”

Dr. Eidson, a pioneer in the development and promotion of the IEEE 1588-2008 standard in various industries, announced the certifications. Charles Tsai, director, product management, represented Cisco Systems, and GQ Wang, senior researcher, represented Huawei Technologies.

“The IEEE Standards Association is committed to providing our stakeholders with value and flexibility throughout the standards development lifecycle — across pre-standards exploration, formal standards development and in standards market implementation,” said Konstantinos Karachalios, managing director, IEEE-SA. “ICAP’s industry-supported conformity assessment program helps accelerate market acceptance of products that prove compliance to IEEE standards.”
