Manufacturing employment increased in Florida for a second straight year, reports the 2015 Florida Manufacturers Register ®, an industrial database and directory published by Manufacturers’ News, Inc. (MNI) Evanston, IL. According to data collected by MNI, Florida manufacturers added 3,959 jobs from March 2014 to March 2015, an increase of 1% that fell shy of the nation’s 1.7% average increase reported by the Labor Department for the same time period.
Manufacturers’ News reports Florida is now home to 14,135 manufacturers employing 468,553 workers.
“With its pro-business tax policies and ideal location for serving global markets, manufacturers continue to find Florida a great place to do business,” says Tom Dubin, President of the Evanston, IL-based publishing company, which has been surveying industry since 1912. “However, the state still faces tough competition from its neighbors and faces a shortage of the skilled labor needed for today’s advanced manufacturing.”
According to Manufacturers’ News, the fabricated metals sector led job gains, posting a 2.8% increase. The industry ranks second in the state for industrial employment, employing 46,862.
First-ranked electronics posted a 3.1% decline in industrial jobs, and currently accounts for 47,615 Florida workers.
Most Florida industries added jobs over the year, says MNI, with growth reported in rubber/plastics, up 4.5%; lumber/wood, up 2.4%; instruments/related products, up 1.6%; textiles/apparel, up 1.3% and industrial machinery, up 1.2%.
Industries posting declines included transportation equipment, down 6.9% and primary metals, down 3.2%.
MNI reports gains were concentrated in both Northeast Florida, up 3.3%, and South Florida, up 2.3%. Increases were reported across Florida’s top cities, with Jacksonville up 5.5%; Orlando, up 3.1%; Fort Lauderdale, up 1.6%; and Miami, up 1%.
