ExxonMobil and The Open Group to Host Event for Next-Generation Open Interoperable Process Control Framework

June 17, 2016 | By Business Wire News

SPRING, Texas

ExxonMobil Research and Engineering Company and The Open Group will host an Industry Day for Users in support of next-generation open interoperable process control framework on June 27 at the ExxonMobil campus in Spring, Texas.

The industry day event will focus on current end-user business and technical challenges, and will explore standards-based solutions using an open, interoperable architecture for automation. This event is a step toward the creation of a consensus-based consortium of end users, system integrators, suppliers, and standards organizations, which will be needed to attain sustained success of the open, interoperable process control framework.

“We continue to challenge ourselves by looking at existing processes and finding innovative ways of working using both internal and external ideas,” said Vijay Swarup, vice president of research and development at ExxonMobil Research and Engineering Company. “This breakthrough initiative could help transform refining and chemical manufacturing through the use of high-speed computational components, modular software, open standards, and the use of autonomous tools.”

The initiative aims to design a new architecture that will control and optimize process manufacturing facilities while enabling future maintenance and fleet optimization. The design and implementation will be based on architectural standards that will ensure cybersecurity, modularity, interoperability, extensibility, reuse, portability and scalability of the new system.

“The Open Group is pleased to co-host this groundbreaking event with ExxonMobil. Over the last 25 years, we have helped many industries achieve software portability, reuse and interoperability through open standards such as those for UNIX®, POSIX and FACE™,” said Steve Nunn, chief executive officer of The Open Group. “To be valuable, standards must address business and technical customer requirements, and we need to start by gathering those requirements. We look forward to the input from leading customer organizations to help guide this collaboration in developing standards that will reshape the future of industrial automation and computing.”

The industry day event will be held at the Exxon Mobil Houston Campus, 22777 Springwoods Village Parkway, Spring TX 77389 on Monday June 27 from 9:00am to 12:30pm. The event is open to all end-user companies that derive the majority of their revenue from manufacturing processes using industrial process control systems.
