Eaton Announces Winners of the 38th Annual SOURCE Awards Lighting Design Competition

PEACHTREE CITY, Ga.

Power management company Eaton today announced the winners of the 38th Annual SOURCE Awards national lighting design competition. The winners were recognized today at LIGHTFAIR^® International 2015 in New York. Four professional awards and six student awards were presented.

The annual competition, which began in 1977, focuses on furthering the understanding, knowledge and function of lighting as a primary element in design and requires the predominant use of lighting and controls products from Eaton’s lighting solutions. Entries are judged on the blending of aesthetics, creative achievement, technical performance and the degree in which the lighting meets the project constraints and design concept goals.

Professional Category

Winner: Bridget Williams Lighting Design, Apple Valley, California, and designer Bridget Williams, IALD, LC, MIES, for the lighting of the Saint Charles Borromeo Church in North Hollywood, California.
Honorable Mention: Horton Lees Brogden Lighting Design, Boston, Massachusetts, and the design team of Carrie Hawley, Barrett Newell, Brandon Thrasher and Allison Hunter for the lighting design of two Biogen Idec corporate office buildings in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
Awards of Recognition: Syska Hennessy Group, New York, New York, and lighting designers Mary Ann Hay, Associate IALD, MIES, LEED AP, and Anton Lama, Associate IALD, MIES, LEED AP, for the lighting of the Bill and Melinda Gates Hall of Computing and Information Science Building at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York; and Sistemas, Tecnología y Maquinarias (S.T.M.), Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, and the design team of Iván Jiménez, Candida Diaz, MIES, and Tirso Hernandez, along with architect Antonio Imbert of Simples Arquitectura for the lighting design of the Punta Cana International Airport Terminal B in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic.

Student Category

Winner: Megan Everhart from Appalachian State University, Boone, North Carolina, for her conceptual lighting design restaurant project, titled Fresh Restaurant & Bar. Everhart was under the direction of Jeanne Mercer-Ballard, associate professor of the Interior Design Program at Appalachian State University.
Honorable Mentions: Hazel Chang from Appalachian State University, Boone, North Carolina, for her conceptual retail project titled REI’s Angular Outlook; and Kaitlyn Hutchens, also from Appalachian State University, is being honored for her Tatu the Restaurant project. Chang, who won the competition last year, was under the instruction of Hessam Ghamari, an assistant professor of the Interior Design Program at the university, and Hutchens was under the direction of Mercer-Ballard.
Awards of Recognition: Kelli Adolay from Purdue University, West Lafayette, Indiana, won for the conceptual lighting design of her Gemini Life Retail Space project; Alexine Goldwag from Virginia Tech, Blacksburg, Virginia, for her An Upstate New York Residence project; and Gabrielle Enzweiler from the University of Cincinnati, Cincinnati, Ohio, for her reNEW Retail Space project. Adolay was under the direction of Lisa Vanzee, assistant professor in the Interior Design Program at Purdue University; Goldwag was under the instruction of Lisa Tucker, program chair of the Interior Design Program at Virgin Tech; and Enzweiler was under the direction of Brian Davies, associate professor and interior design coordinator at the university’s College of Design, Architecture, Art and Planning at Cincinnati University.

The professional winning firm, Bridget Williams Lighting Design, received a $2,000 monetary award. Student winner Everhart received $1,500 and each of the Honorable Mention students was awarded $500. All winners were presented with a crystal trophy and offered an invitation to attend a complimentary class at the SOURCE, Eaton’s state-of-the-art lighting educational center located in Peachtree City, Georgia. The students’ instructors are also invited to attend a class.
