Dow Named to Top 10 Best Companies for Leaders List

January 26, 2016 | By Business Wire News

MIDLAND, Mich.

The Dow Chemical Company (NYSE:DOW) is once again recognized in the top 10 Best Companies for Leaders by Chief Executive magazine. Since 2005, Chief Executive has identified companies that excel in leadership development, which includes both formal and informal training. The final, top 40 ranking consists of public companies with over $1 billion in revenue, and the top 10 on the list scored within several points of one another. IBM, GE and Unilever join Dow in this prestigious ranking.

“In today’s volatile and uncertain world, effective leadership makes the difference between unleashed potential and unrealized promise. Ranking within the top 10 again in 2016 is a significant recognition of our on-going commitment to developing Dow’s extraordinary talent, our Human Element at Work, through all stages of their leadership journey,” said Andrew N. Liveris, Dow chairman and chief executive officer.

Each company is judged on its reputation among peers along with the percent of senior management recruited from internal talent pools. Other influencing factors consider whether the company has a formal leadership process, the commitment level of the CEO to the leadership development program and the number of companies that report recruiting from the company being evaluated. Each prospect is also given a shareholder value-performance metric based on 10-year growth or decline in market capitalization.

Dow’s forward thinking approach to developing current and future leaders can be seen in a variety of initiatives. Initiatives like the New People Leader training that involves Dow’s partnership with Harvard Business Publishing to provide foundational leadership development to all new people leaders globally using an innovative blended-learning approach.

Another example is the skills-based Leadership in Action program, which offers a unique twist on leadership development by introducing leaders to real world experiences that test their ability to lead courageously, collaborate effectively, and deliver innovative solutions. Superior leadership at Dow is recognized internally through the Olympus Award, granted to outstanding Dow people leaders whose excellence at developing, engaging and inspiring employees exemplifies the leadership behaviors needed to enhance employee success and enable Dow’s success.

“Continuous focus on differentiating ourselves by creating superior leaders at all levels within Dow is a key driver for the Company’s success, and this external recognition of these efforts is gratifying,” added Johanna Söderström, Dow’s chief human resources officer.
