March 3, 2015 | By Business Wire News

WASHINGTON

Officials at the Department of Defense (DoD) Corrosion Policy and Oversight Office announced that they have contracted with SSPC: The Coatings Society and NACE International to provide tuition-free courses in corrosion prevention and mitigation to DoD personnel.

Under contracts extending from January through December 2015, SSPC and NACE will offer free tuition to active duty and civilian personnel within the DoD for 65 courses pertaining to the fundamentals of basic corrosion, protective coatings, cathodic protection, and coatings inspection for shipboard, pipeline, refining, marine, and offshore applications.

“We encourage anyone who works on DoD equipment, facilities, or infrastructure to take advantage of the chance to improve his or her knowledge in preventing and mitigating corrosion,” said Daniel J. Dunmire, director of the DoD Corrosion Office.

Since 2005, when the Corrosion Office awarded its first contract for training and certifying military personnel, SSPC and NACE have educated 3,448 students. These professionals have come from a variety of armed service divisions, including the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, which employs highly trained and experienced coating inspectors in its quality assurance program.

“The availability of DoD funding for training and certification courses in industrial coatings provides an outstanding resource for the Army Corps of Engineers to ensure that our quality assurance staff is exceptionally knowledgeable,” noted John L. Pariseau, a quality assurance specialist at the Corps of Engineers.

SSPC course listings are listed at www.sspc.org/DoD_Training/. NACE course listings can be found at http://www.nace.org/cstm/education/courses/courseschedule.aspx.

Students may inquire about funding for SSPC courses by contacting Jennifer Merck at merck@sspc.org or 412.281.2331, extension 2221. Students may ask about funding for NACE courses by contacting Laura Thomann at Laura.Thomann@nace.org or 281.228.6438, or Carmen Peebles at Carmen.Peebles@nace.org.

The DoD Corrosion Policy and Oversight Office develops and recommends policy guidance on corrosion prevention and control (CPC) for the DoD; coordinates CPC activities among the armed services; administers a science and technology program to advance the state of the art in corrosion prevention and mitigation; ensures that CPC is fully considered throughout the life cycle of military assets; and provides guidance for improving corrosion maintenance and training.
