Cybersecurity Expert Bruce Schneier to Keynote Second Annual CyberSEED Conference and Hackathon

October 8, 2015 | By Business Wire News

STORRS, Conn.

Top engineering students from around the country will converge in Connecticut later this month for the nation’s foremost scholastic cybersecurity hackathon. Sponsored and hosted by the Comcast Center of Excellence for Security Innovation (CSI) at the University of Connecticut, the second annual CyberSEED conference will run participants through a gauntlet of challenges drawn from some of the greatest real world issues facing the cybersecurity community. Author and cybersecurity visionary Bruce Schneier will keynote.

Over the course of two days, beginning October 29th, students will be asked to play the roles of cyber-attackers, so that they can better understand how threats arise, and how to neutralize them. In the kickoff challenge – Capture the Flag – participants will simulate a full-scale cyber attack on a virtual corporate network, against increasingly difficult security protections.

Other challenges at the event include an Internet of Things challenge, which will explore vulnerabilities and security tactics around the increasingly connected world of networked devices, and a “social engineering” challenge.

Details follow:

WHO: The CyberSEED Conference will feature more than 20 speakers, including a special keynote address from Bruce Schneier, fellow at the Berkman Center for Internet & Society at Harvard Law School. Schneier is also a program fellow at the New America Foundation’s Open Technology Institute and the CTO of Resilient Systems. Other featured keynote addresses will include Rob Knake, Senior Fellow, Council on Foreign Affairs, and Dr. Srini Devadas, Professor of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, MIT.

WHAT:

This year’s theme is emerging cybersecurity trends in cloud, the Internet of Things and mobility. The cybersecurity challenges will test the students’ abilities to penetrate virtual corporate networks, employ social engineering tactics and exploit vulnerabilities in Wi-Fi connected devices.

WHERE: CyberSEED is taking place in the Rome Commons Ballroom at the UConn Storrs Campus: 626 Gilbert Road Ext., Storrs, CT 06269.

WHEN: October 29-30, 2015.

WHY: CyberSEED brings together top information security professionals and business leaders to discuss emerging cybersecurity trends and formulate best strategies for tackling current and future threats. In the same academic setting, more than 20 universities will be competing in three unique cybersecurity challenges for more than $100,000 in prizes.

About CSI:

CSI was established on the UConn Storrs campus in April 2014. The center unites the expertise of researchers within UConn’s existing Center for Hardware Assurance, Security and Engineering (CHASE) and Comcast’s leadership in Internet systems security. CSI develops robust detection systems and analytical tools to protect the computer chips and other hardware components vital to Internet broadband systems from malicious attacks, unauthorized access, and faulty or counterfeit products.
