Based on platform, the report categorizes the global electronic warfare market into four major segments. They are:

  • Airborne
  • Naval
  • Land-based
  • Unmanned

Global EW market for airborne

Growing aerial threats and budget constraints from governments globally have caused the global defense forces to reinforce their defense systems by employing advanced airborne EW systems. This suggests that major revenue generation until 2020 will be by upgrading the EW systems. Meanwhile, in Europe, the air missile defense systems have strengthened looking at Russia’s role in Eastern Ukraine disputes and the military exercises along its western borders surrounding the High North/Baltic regions (i.e., Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania).

“The defense spending is expected to cover air defense missile systems, suitable upgrades of air defense systems, and EW devices,” says Arushi Thakur, one of the industry expert at Technavio for research on defense sector.

In 2014, Exelis entered a pact with the US Navy, worth USD 91.7 million. This contract bound Exelis to develop 42 AN/ALQ-214(V)4 for the Navy’s F/A-18C/D and F/A-18E/F Hornet and Super Hornet carrier-based strike fighters.

Global EW market for naval

The global military budget constraints demand that the EW system is enhanced in operating across wider bandwidths, as well as meet the requirements of modularity, power, flexibility, and portability.

In April 2016, Raytheon secured a contract worth USD 1 billion from Boeing for the development and supply of new jammers, namely NGJ, which will be integrated into the Boeing EA-18G Growler aircraft of the US Navy. The NGJ is a next-generation smart pod system that ensures advanced electronic attack technology. The delivery of the NGJ is scheduled in December 2020.

A large part (USD 195.08 million) of the Pentagon’s budget for FY2015 was invested in the development of the US Navy’s AN/SLQ-32 shipboard EW system program. For FY2017 requested budget, the allocation for the AN/SLQ-32 shipboard EW system procurement has been increased to USD 274.89 million.

Global EW market for land-based platform

The increasing focus on and the emergence of asymmetric warfare countermeasures has demanded highly sophisticated and advanced ISR capabilities in the field of EW systems.

In 2015, the US DoD entered a contract with four technology security companies worth USD 1 billion to improve the military’s information and EW division. The contract was split between Adams Communication and Engineering Technology, DHPC Technologies, Eoir Technologies, and Praxis Engineering. This agreement involved situational awareness, secure communications, and protection of the US soldiers from sudden attack.

“In the same year, the US Army also signed a contract of USD 45 million with a US-based technology provider, Metova, to support its cyberspace and EW efforts. This agreement covers live experimentation, and modeling and simulation tests, and finally regional hub node experimentation,” says Arushi.

Global EW market for unmanned

EW and continual developments in its field have become key strategies for all wars. Thus, with rising cold wars, territorial disputes, and political conflicts, the global EW market for an unmanned platform is expected to grow during the forecast period. Integration of small electronic systems in patrol vessels and UAVs will also boost market growth.

The growing number of contracts being signed further strengthen this point. For instance, in 2014, Sagem signed a contract with French Armed Forces for the supply of a number of EW Crecerelle UAVs. These UAVs are said to be installed with a novel type of payloads that will allow jamming of tactical communications of the enemy.

In 2012, the US Navy awarded a contract to three companies namely, AAI Corp., Insitu, and Computer Sciences Corp. (CSC) worth USD 874 million, which covered the five-year provision of operation and support for ISR missions using UAVs.
