A World Beyond Silicon … Efficient Power Conversion (EPC) Launches New eGaN® Power Transistors That Break Silicon’s Previously Unmatched Cost-Speed Barriers

April 29, 2015 | By Business Wire News

EL SEGUNDO, Calif.

Efficient Power Conversion Corporation (EPC) announces the 60 V EPC2035 and 100 V EPC2036 eGaN power transistors designed to compete in price, while outperforming silicon. These products demonstrate that gallium nitride can displace silicon semiconductors and drive the industry back onto the Moore’s Law growth curve.

With today’s announcement, there is a non-silicon technology that has both superior performance and price compared with silicon for the first time in 60 years. Price, the last barrier to widespread adoption of GaN transistors when comparing with silicon, has fallen.

GaN today is facing a period of extremely rapid growth because semiconductors using this material give companies a major performance and cost advantage. GaN’s growth is coming from both the replacement of existing silicon devices, as well as from entirely new applications that are enabled by its superior performance. This second group of applications includes 5G wireless communications, wireless power, virtual reality glasses, advanced gaming features, autonomous vehicles and advanced medical technology, such as wireless heart pumps – to name a few.

“The foundation of the entire electronics industry and the namesake of a region known for its incredible technology innovation, is in peril,” said Alex Lidow, chief executive officer, EPC. “Silicon has reached its inherent performance limitations, failing to fuel innovation at the speed required to fulfill the promise of Moore’s Law and help companies drive maximum sales and valuation. GaN is being used by companies the world over to fuel their innovation pipelines, deliver a performance advantage and bring to market applications never before possible.”

Price and Availability

Pricing for the EPC2035 power transistors at 1K units is $0.36 each and $0.38 for the EPC2036. The EPC9049 and EPC9050 development boards are $104.40 each. About EPC

EPC is the leader in enhancement mode gallium nitride based power management devices and was the first to introduce enhancement-mode gallium-nitride-on-silicon (eGaN) FETs as power MOSFET replacements in applications such as DC-DC converters, wireless power transfer, envelope tracking, RF transmission, power inverters, remote sensing technology (LiDAR), and class-D audio amplifiers with device performance many times greater than the best silicon power MOSFETs.
