A.M. BestTV: Re Plane! Swiss Re Backs a Round-The-World Solar Powered Flight

September 28, 2015
By Business Wire News

This episode of A.M.BestTV examines global reinsurer Swiss Re Corporate Solutions Ltd.’s (Swiss Re) insuring and sponsoring of Solar Impulse II, a sun-powered airplane, as it circles the globe. Click on to view the entire program.

The reinsurer says the experimental project highlights issues of risk, innovation and sustainability.

“Solar Impulse 2 is a very exciting project. It is trying to make history by being the first plane to circle the world powered only by the sun,” said Rudi Flunger, head of regions & specialty, Swiss Re. “Swiss Re is the sole insurer of the plane, pilot and third party. The plane is valued at CHF$12.5 million.”

The airplane has a wing span of a 747, but is as light as a family car, with the power of a small motorcycle. The airplane successfully flew from Japan to Hawaii in five days and will resume its around-the-world trip in spring 2016.
