Manufacturing Employment in Maryland/DC Continues Downward Trend

August 11, 2015 | By Business Wire News

EVANSTON, Ill.

Manufacturers’ News, Inc.– Maryland/DC lost manufacturing jobs over the past year, but at a slower rate than in previous years, reports the 2016 Maryland/DC Manufacturers Directory®, an industrial database and directory published by Manufacturers’ News, Inc. (MNI) Evanston, IL. According to data collected by MNI, Maryland/DC manufacturers lost 470 industrial jobs from May 2014 to May 2015, or less than one percent.

MNI reports Maryland/DC is now home to 4,418 manufacturers employing 185,088 workers. Employment in the region’s industrial sector has fallen 4% over the past five years.

“While most U.S. states have recovered at least a portion of losses suffered during the recession, Maryland/DC has continued to lose manufacturing jobs,” says Tom Dubin, President of the Evanston, IL-based publishing company, which has been surveying industry since 1912. “However, this year’s losses were minimal compared to previous years, and its continued focus on high-tech manufacturing, particularly in the 3D printing industry, may help the state reverse this course in the future.”

Declines were led by the printing/publishing sector, which fell 4.9% over the year, and 12.5% over the past five years. Printing/publishing ranks first in the region for industrial employment, with 31,079 jobs.

Losses were also reported in primary metals, down 11%; lumber/wood, down 5.7%; stone/clay/glass, down 2.6%; textiles/apparel, down 1.8%.

Baltimore posted another year of losses, with industrial jobs down 1.9%, and down 15% since May of 2010. MNI data shows 63 companies have left the city over this five-year period, and 77 left the state altogether. Baltimore still accounts for the most industrial jobs in the region, however, with 30,386 jobs.

Industrial employment inched up 1.1% in Washington, D.C. according to MNI.
