Information and Communications Technology Heavyweights Weigh in on the Future of ICT and IoT at COMPUTEX

TAIPEI, Taiwan

COMPUTEX, the leading global ICT show with a complete supply chain, today completed its CPX Conference and two forums featuring global information and communications technology (ICT) heavyweights such as ARM, Advantech, Cisco, Delta Electronics, Intel, Microsoft, Siemens, and TSMC. The technology trendsetters envisioned how the Internet of Things (IoT), smart manufacturing, virtual and augmented reality, and connectivity would scale and define global tech ecosystems for the future.

In his keynote, “Proven Partnership Will Drive IoT Innovation,” ARM CEO Simon Segars said, “IoT is no longer an imaginary concept; hardware-software integration will facilitate comprehensive solutions in many industries.” Besides showcasing diverse industrial IoT applications, in collaboration with Delta Electronics and Advantech, ARM also highlighted promising developments in healthcare and industrial engineering, where IoT systems can gather and monitor patient or industrial data, detect and notify caretakers or management of problems, and aggregate data for historical or predictive analytics in real time. Segars’s statements were endorsed by Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Corporation (TSMC) R&D Vice President Cliff Hou, who recognized the importance of IoT to technology integration and development.

In his keynote, “Industrie 4.0: Future of Manufacturing in the Digital World,” Siemens Taiwan President and CEO Erdal Elver said, “Industry 4.0 enables communications between devices and between products and production facilities. It connects the virtual and real world.” To embrace and benefit from Industry 4.0 and smart factories powered by IoT devices, Elver suggested that enterprises transform to digital technologies, optimize product lifecycle management systems, and increase automation. He said it is also critical to utilize virtual planning to maximize productivity.

Martin Dubé, Cisco managing director for IoT solution sales in Asia Pacific, Japan and Greater China, spoke about Cisco’s working partnership with the German port city of Hamburg in the design and connectivity of digital technologies to establish a modern “smart city.” He noted that the program has enabled smart transport control; smart street lighting; greater mobile connectivity; and improved quality of life. It has boosted the work efficiency of the city’s employees, improved public safety through infrastructure sensing and monitoring, and improved delivery of remote services to citizens.

On June 1, Microsoft held a forum in which it invited its Windows 10 hardware partners to create virtual reality and augmented reality devices for Windows Holographic, the platform that powers Microsoft HoloLens, a fully untethered, holographic computer, enabling users to interact with high-definition holograms. In opening Windows Holographic to partners, Microsoft shared its vision for mixed reality, also known as augmented reality, a world where devices interact to change the way people work, communicate, learn and play. Microsoft illustrated this concept with a demonstration of design engineers collaborating in virtual reality on the design of a motorcycle.

“With Windows 10, we’ve been on an incredible journey with our partners, and today we usher in the next frontier of computing — mixed reality,” said Terry Myerson, executive vice president, Windows and Devices. “We are excited to be working with Intel, AMD, Qualcomm, HTC, Acer, ASUS, CyberPowerPC, Dell, Falcon Northwest, HP, iBuyPower, Lenovo, MSI and many others supporting great virtual reality experiences on Windows 10, and we are looking forward to opening up Windows Holographic to the partner ecosystem for the future.”

An important point in a second-day June 1 CPX Conference panel discussion, “Diversity x Innovation – An In-depth Discussion on IoT Applications,” was that ICT companies need to cooperate and their solutions need to interoperate to achieve the full potential of the IoT. Panelists from IDC, Advantech, Blocks, Bosch, TSMC, and SK Telecom agreed that ICT companies need to partner to help build the IoT ecosystem, whose restructured and re-imagined processes are transforming industries such as banking, retail, manufacturing, transportation, consumer services, healthcare, entertainment, sports and recreation. Panelists also agreed that it is a significant mind shift for competitive organizations to cooperate on some levels to deliver the rich insights and efficiencies possible through the sensors and analytics that are core components of IoT-based information systems.
