Sumitomo Machinery Corporation of America of Chesapeake, Va., and SM-Cyclo Canada of Mississauga, Ont., launched a new “Sumitomo Drive Technologies” brand on Oct. 1, 2003. The new brand, which has the tagline “Always on the Move,” unites a total of 30 Sumitomo companies under one global brand. Now, all 30 companies fall under the parent company of Sumitomo Heavy Industries – power transmission and controls group.

“For many years the name Sumitomo has been synonymous with the premier products in the power transmission marketplace worldwide,” said John Cox, president of Sumitomo Machinery Corporation of America. “Our new brand name and tagline capture in a few words the essence of our capability, capacity and commitment — past, present and future — to the industries we serve on a global basis.”

The global power transmission and controls group, one of the largest businesses within Sumitomo Heavy Industries, has eight manufacturing plants, 35 assembly centres, 226 sales offices and 2,300 employees throughout the world.

Sumitomo Drive Technologies’ power transmission and controls group has captured 70 per cent of the Japanese market and 15 per cent of the non-Japanese market share. In August 2003, it achieved sales of 10 million Cyclo drives, the company’s premier product.
